Hi all

For anyone who tolerated my tooing and fro-ing posts about my job about 1/2 months ago, you'll be pleased to hear I have FINALLy quit
I should leave mid September!

For those who were fortunate to not read my previous posts a quick synopsis
I've been a social worker for nearly 20 years
Been team manger for an Adolescent Safeguarding Team in an inner London Borough for nearly 5 years. So fed up. Ridiculous risky which risks that literally cannot be reduced due to lack of any community provision and support. Police not charging for crimes committed so no bail conditions being put in place and risks escalating. It's harm outside of the home type of team so stabbings, county lines and attempt on life and overdosing etc.

I feel great! Two fingers up to social work

Well good for you! You sound so relieved, I wish you well.

CurlyTop1980 · 22/07/2022 15:23

Thanks
I was being facetious about two fingers up BTW. I do feel relieved though. Not sure if I will stay in SW or just leave entirely. Have no plans whatsoever.

It's gotta be done sometimes! My husband decided to leave a job he was being bullied in without a new job to go to. I still remember the instant look of relief on his face when he decided. Five years on, he's in a much better job/ place! Well done!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 22/07/2022 16:56

Well done. I left a job I hated with horrible people and every day was just so stressful. I'd said I wanted to leave a lot but kept getting persuaded to stay. In the end I was so relieved.

CurlyTop1980 · 22/07/2022 17:08

What did your husband do?

CurlyTop1980 · 22/07/2022 17:09

Thanks for your comments. I currently feel great. I did resign last month but they convinced me to stay. But my heart is not in it anymore.

Well done you! I can't believe you managed to stay in the profession for so long.

I lasted about 4 years running projects that support people with mental health issues and other complex needs in London.

Serious lack of funding and not enough staff but mostly the realisation that the way we were working was simply unsafe and management was pushing us to work with really dangerous clients (I am talking serious criminal convictions as well as severe mental health conditions) with little training support or proper safeguarding.

Three people in my team quit without jobs to go to and I did the same in the end.

I also have a friend who left teaching a couple of weeks ago again because of safety issues.

I will never again take roles on the frontline. Not worth the stress and risking physically harm for a lousy salary.

CurlyTop1980 · 22/07/2022 19:02

Whitehorsegirl.

Thanks! I cannot believe I've managed it for so long too. Just felt stuck I suppose and wasn't sure what i wanted to do. But I've saved roughly enough to 'pay' me enough for a few months to cover my expenses. Then I will decide what to do
I feel exhilarated.

Good for you, Boris!

What did your husband do?

He worked for a small company providing online training and qualifications. It was run very badly and the company culture was very unprofessional.

TheSoundOfMucus · 25/07/2022 19:52

@CurlyTop1980 I did the same, in a similar SW role, several years ago. I decided to remain in SW as not qualified for anything else. I went independent for 8 years but have recently decided to return to LA SW - but this time in Adult services and just SW level. I’m loving being told what to do and having less responsibility. I’m 20 years qualified , 21 years until retirement…..

Enjoy your well earned break!

As you are in London, you may find an interesting, well paid job that utilises your skills without the level of stress and responsibility.

SoSo19 · 25/07/2022 19:54

Ahh well done for resigning!

However I am due to start an access to social work course in September and now I’m not sure if I should bother 😂

CurlyTop1980 · 25/07/2022 20:17

@TheSoundOfMucus thanks for your comments and high five for 20 years +. We are very far and few between!!!

Yeah I'm gonna take some time to lose weight (Sw has definitely made me fat) and get fit. Then look at possibly Fostering Form.F as I used to do those and have done the training. Be independent. You're right there are alot of options.

@SoSo19 don't let me.put you off. I'm old in the tooth and work in a very intensive and complex area of SW. Choose carefully which team you want to be in and stick to your guns. Good luck.

My cousin is a SW (in the SW) she works with families. She loves her job (in spite of the serious lack of funding etc). It's a world apart from what @CurlyTop1980 did as a SW. I couldn't do either myself, but you might love it!!

My cousin is a lot better at putting boundaries in place & not getting upset/emotionally involved than I could ever be. I think it's the best way to be IF you can.

@CurlyTop1980 congratulations! 🎂💐

it's a shame as we can't afford to lose the good ones!, but your health, your happiness & yes, your life!! Are very important too!

I hope you find a way of using your experience that also gives you fulfilment & makes you feel valued!

best wishes!!

CurlyTop1980 · 25/07/2022 20:43

Aww thanks for all the love everyone......

I'm genuinely excited to start a new chapter in my life.

Well done you, must be very liberating💐

I feel similar with nursing. I’m an RMN 20+ years qualified and find myself in a management role. I don’t like it really, it’s not for me at all but feel stuck. Damn sense of loyalty and not wanting to admit defeat I suppose.

I’m giving myself 5 years max and I will leave. Love what another poster said about being told what to do. I want to drop at least 1 band, ideally 2 and ‘just’ be a nurse again.

Good luck for the future. I hope whatever you enjoy whatever you decide to do.
