How long for bad / disputed reference situation to come about

Hi, highly appreciate what I'm asking is probably akin to a piece of string.

I was wondering how soon a problem reference situation comes out in employment. I kind of apprehensively fronted it out and got started today but nothing directly said yet.

I have read situations where people have been escorted out the building in dismissal situations but I was wondering if that happens soonest when starting with a new company in these situations?

It's a fixed term role with at least 6 months initial probation. I have tried to get hold of the colleague who left just previous to me to see if our ex employer would or does respond to a reference (as rumors were going around they already got a job and started arguing with the boss as couldn't bring themselves to resign formally and work notice period oddly) but they are not findable on any social media / mobile number removed from a meta sms group same time as they quit that I was hoping was theirs was denied as being for them. (I'm aware the ex employer is under no obligation to give reference so I'm ready if it comes to a point of can you provide an alternative but the new company has understandably always made a point they do have to approach who you were last working for) the new company does seem good advising they do offer a policy where if a dentist/doctors is needed then you get 2 hours paid leyway even with shift working!

Thanks

Me too.

Sorry OP, but I don't understand what you are asking. And what does policy on medical appoi have to do with references?

Metabigot · 18/07/2022 20:46

Were you dismissed from your last job OP?

Sorry @Userxxxxx I don't understand what you're asking either.
Have you started a new job and they're waiting for the reference from your last employer?
Are you worried it will be a bad reference and you'll then lose the job?

Kind of very much yes.

I ultimately lost my job to go to a dental appointment (which prob was for the best) - I’ve kept the employer text where they say bye. I don’t want to talk to them for fear of them inciting the ex employer to respond - they respond to negative customer reviews in an embarrassing argumentative way so I really don’t know if they will ignore ref request from new employer. I’m just mixed with if they do respond how quickly my new employer could take to respond and action.

Sounds like your old boss text you not to come back when you took time off for a dental appointment @Userxxxxx ?

Are you in hospitality? If so I'd just keep your head down at your new job and carry on. Hospitality are desperate for staff so if you're a good worker they'll give you a chance.

Your old employer may not even respond to the request for a reference. But if they do and your new employer calls you in to discuss then just calmly explain the situation and show them the text.

Good luck in the new job

What reason did you give your current employer for losing your last job? Have you told them what happened? It seems odd that an employer dismissed simply for going to a dental appointment, so I suspect there is more to that story than you are telling - there is no right to time off for dental appointments, so did you go after you had been told you couldn't have time off?

To be honest, how I would react would depend on all the stuff that you aren't telling us. If you had lied about how your last job ended, I would seriously consider whether I wanted you working for me - not because you got dismissed (that I would be happy to discuss) but because you had lied to me, and that lie would breach my trust in you. But nobody except your new employer can tell you what they would do.

I am not sure if you are aware of this, but if you have lied or misled your employer, if they ever find out, by any means, that would be potential grounds for dismissal - the reference isn't the only way an employer might discover the truth.

It’s two fold where basically I started and unbeknown to me thinking I was on payroll 31st May it transpired I wasn’t on payroll until 6th June at the earliest so that’s a first hurdle. I have no idea how I prove working against date in their employment contract was majorly wrong, I guess I’ve the interview arrangement text.

I did not work for a caring or appointment friendly employer who has no grips losing staff (fine this I understand) - I asked how this would work when they after the summer moved further away if they showed now this was a problem to receive a thanks all the best and bye message 5 weeks into employment, it could have been worse but there was no row and to my mind there would likely have been further probs later one (under 2 years you have no rights this I also understand) I don’t know what is happening to wages earnt so perhaps this ref situation is actually the least of my worries. There is more to the story I guess if you want to know I was not happier travelling further come end of the summer for min wage and an employer who wanted a lot of hours.

My bad part in all this comes from pure embarrassment (it seemed I’ve not looked after self) and not wanting to discuss removal of teeth which is now done (with new employer) so they think I left a job 1 week later then I did, which I can’t more sorry about but that’s the corner I got me into.

I have since had an interview with someone who knew me from an far older past employment who I felt better being much more confident and assertive about what happened. Plus another employer has got in touch who previously rejected me before I went to work for the shady company to start with.

But as the morning has gone on I’m probably well over thinking and best just seeing if there is any approach. The new employer is worlds away from the previous but that is no excuse.
