Help = I lied….

Help….

So I applied for a new role in a new company. Overegged my base as the firm I currently work for has a pretty top end bonus structure.. Now offered the job but the base isn’t where I expected it to be, it’s within about 2% of what I said I was on.

Going crazy, I know I messed up but I really want the job… I get it, shouldn’t have done it but my head is just spinning, can’t stop thinking about what I’ve done. HELP!

Do mumsnet give awards for humble brags?

No, that’s Reddit.

Newmum110 · 16/07/2022 19:50

People do this all the time. They paid you what they were willing to pay you. Payroll will get your P45 but it doesn't matter, you could have had some unpaid leave for all they know. Don't start renegotiating salaries that will make things way worse.

JenniferWooley · 16/07/2022 19:50

OP your p45 will most likely go direct to payroll & I can assure you they won't be back calculating your p45 year to date figures to work out your previous salary - they'll input the relevant information & move on to their next task on the list.

Takingthepmaybe · 16/07/2022 19:51

Christ don’t go back and tell them! The only people who will look at your p60 will be payroll for your tax code.

even if they find out you exaggerate - I really wouldn’t worry!

JimmyShoo · 16/07/2022 19:53

I started two different jobs without a P45. Just filled out a HMRC new starter form. No problem.

FortunaMajor · 16/07/2022 19:53

You don't need to give a P45/P60, just complete a new starter form.

If you need proof of NI number you can get this as a PDF from your online HMRC account.

In this way they will never see you previous salary. I doubt they'd care, they've offered you what they can afford.

SavingsThreads · 16/07/2022 19:54

I don't understand, are you going be earning less? From £188 down to £130 plus up to £39?

Angelik · 16/07/2022 19:57

Oh seeing the figures involved I call bull...

alphapie · 16/07/2022 19:57

It's a non issue, many people do this, as some businesses want to pay around what applicants are currently on.

Payrol and at most HR will see your P45, also you don't even have to give it to them, you can fill out the P60 to start.

user143677433 · 16/07/2022 19:57

I have done this for every job in the last 20 years, and it is very common/standard in my industry (I hire dozens of people each year). They probably already know, or assumed you would do this, and they don’t care because they want you.

Thefriendlymoth · 16/07/2022 19:58

You didn’t lie though, the figure you gave them was what you take home with your bonus, it’s what you were paid- in my opinion they were happy to meet your suggested base, suggests that they want you - because you are right for the role and they wanted to pay you what you deserve, not because they were just desperate to match your old wage for the heck of it. Congrats OP, doubt there will be any issues.

HaveringWavering · 16/07/2022 19:58

For future reference, the question is usually asked as “what is your salary expectation?”. Bit weird for them to ask what you’re currently on, that is none of their business. Are you sure they definitely asked for your current salary? I would not give it any more thought.

Yes, I wondered this as well 🤔 . Will you not be taking an overall paycut (base plus bonus) compared to your current role?

GCHeretic · 16/07/2022 20:00

Headspinner · 16/07/2022 19:23

That I lied to get the higher base, and that they’ll find out when I send through P45 (which wont have my bonus in for this year)

They won’t likely check.

If they did find out it’s nearly certain that you would be dismissed for gross misconduct.

My first thought it was less.

Celeryfavour · 16/07/2022 20:02

I'd love to know what your job is as I earn a minuscule proportion of your salary!

Jus OP’s salary is higher than average it’s not a humble brag - it’s factual

its like anyone with a six figure salary can’t ask for advice on their career or salary without it being a humble Brag - a bit ridiculous

Angelik · 16/07/2022 19:57

Why??

It’s def not unrealistic for many Londoners in the city/finance etc

Thehobbit2013 · 16/07/2022 20:10

I believe that P45 shows taxable pay which is after pension deductions have been made. How do they know that you have paid over 20k in Pension contributions?

It would be so easy to style it out. “Oh I thought you asked for my current gross”.

Given it is an overall cut, pretty sure they already figured it out.

ChagSameachDoreen · 16/07/2022 20:16

Unless it's a job as a patisserie chef, I'm not sure what "overegging one's base" might be.
