I need to change career before I hit 40

i currently work in the civil service for the DWP and loathe it. Part of the reason I dislike it is that it’s a desk job and I’m a very active person. I have been considering a career as a police officer, self-employment and probation officer. Can anyone give me an idea of any experience in those careers, I know we are all different but it would be great to know some highs and lows of the career paths I’m considering. Thank you

How many years til 40?

Arabiannights01 · 12/07/2022 15:32

Hi, 7 years so I just feel as though now is a good time to change careers. I dislike my job so much and really need to make the right choice.

thank you

Oh ok, is there a reason for the time line? Could you do any work experience in each field?

Arabiannights01 · 13/07/2022 08:14

No reason, I think it’s just the goal I have put forward for myself to become happier, faster in work.

Any idea what you might like to do as self employment?

"Self employment"
Isn't a career per se.

Could you enrol as a special constable as a start and get some experience of the police force?

MeljustMel · 13/07/2022 09:17

I was a PCSO, brother ex-police.
Excuse this being in short sentences, my puppy is in the way!

Pros:
Life-long job
Good pension (though Teresa May made them work longer and for less, so perks have reduced)
Banter and team support
On-going opportunities & specialisms - dog unit, armed, helicopter, working up the ranks - options for all
Block of days off
Comprehensive training
Exciting - adrenalin, blue lights are amazing!
Ability to win people over and make a difference
Physically demanding (may be a con for some) - the armed units do a lot of physical training

Cons:
Working alone in dangerous situations
Dealing with people who hate you just because of your uniform
Weekend drinking
Lack of public respect
Hours: 7-7 nights, which screws with your circadian rhythm
Heavy kit, can strain back/hips
True danger

Thanks so much for your responses guys.

S/E I have been thinking of anything from hair extensions, health to estate agent. I love the idea of working for myself and creating something that is mine.

wish I had time for work experience but I just don’t right now with work and my son.

Thank you Mel for all of that information. I love the idea of working within a supportive team, no two days are the same and the opportunities. The danger factor scares me, I think I would definitely try to move into a role where I wasn’t faced with the drunks and immediate danger situations. I like the idea of being an officer investigating fraud for instance.

I think Border Force are recruiting at the moment - that might be good for you?

Thank you, I’ll check it out 😊
