Doubting myself as a Marketer

Ive just spent a lot of money doing a CIM Level 4 course, which I enjoyed and I received a distinction in.

But I don't enjoy/not very good at writing articles, blogs etc about things that dont interest me. I went for an entry position at an agency and got asked to write a piece about this upcoming event and my mind went totally blank. I managed a tiny paragraph and the managers quickly ended the interview. It has really knocked my confidence.

I also don't have any Adobe Creative skills which I keep seeing requirements for job roles.

I think I enjoy the theory/strategy/ analytical side of it. Do any roles like this exist or am I dreaming and I've pursued the wrong career? I'm 33 with a two year old and a newborn and I just want to make them proud.

Hi I'm in a large marketing team and there are many roles that don't require content writing or Adobe knowledge. I do some content writing but only because I'm good at it, its not a main part of my job and if my strengths were something else someone else in the team would do that. I also love presenting data, telling stories from market research, a/b testing different campaigns and client calls. Some of our team are project management focused, others are digital support focused and the design team do everything with Adobe. There is so much opportunity for all types of skills. A large organisation might be better than small organisations that need all rounders?

Ah, that's really interesting. Maybe i need to be looking at larger scale companies instead? Thank you!

I would also say to look at larger companies or agencies where your role will be more strategic if that's what you enjoy.

Marketers in smaller businesses need to be able to have a grasp on so many different facets that if content writing or graphic skills aren't for you then it'll be a struggle....unless you have the budget to outsource all creative which is unlikely.

Hi, I work in a marketing team in a large organisation and my role has no element of copywriting/adobe as that would sit in specialist teams or likely with an agency. You might like a planning role, strategy or propositions where you're setting the direction based on insight and theory, writing briefs and collaborating but handing over to specialists to actually deliver. Planning roles exist in agencies too.

Definitely to larger companies! When we were hiring for entry level roles we just wanted a marketing mindset and considered all sorts of different actual skills, making sure we had a balance across the team rather than needing a particular job title to be good at something in particular, with the expectation that that person might grow and specialise according to their strengths. I'm so happy I moved to a large organisation!

Agency dude, this by looking at a strategist, planner or analyst role. Otherwise I'd look at larger companies where the strategy trends to be separate from the implementation / production.

RoseValleyRambles · 13/07/2022 12:50

Aargh. Agency-wise, you'd be looking at...

Hurstlandshome · 13/07/2022 13:15

Did you have marketing experience before you did the CIM?
If no, it will be difficult to enter the field at strategy level. Though not impossible.
If you struggle to write without passion, wouldn't it be easier to find a role in an industry you are interested in? Copywriting is central to being a marketing generalist, and not having this skill will greatly narrow your scope as a marketer - far more than creative skills, which can be outsourced or often a specialised role within the team.

A brand or campaign manager role might work. They are project managers as much as anything.

fugde08 · 13/07/2022 23:14

Okay, thanks everyone dor you advice, I will definitely look at applying for large companies/agencies.

@Hurstlandshome I'm not that experienced and I agree my lack of writing skills does narrow my options. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and take a copywriting course and practice writing.
