Want to switch jobs after maternity leave!

Hiya, looking for opinions!

I work in a cafe in a small village. I worked full time and loved it, then covid hit March 2020 and I was furloughed. I became pregnant September 2020. So was on furlough straight into maternity leave in April 2021 until returning this year April 2022.

I work 2 days a week. They are struggling with staff and there’s the unsaid pressure to help them out more. We are close knit and they feel like my family. My partner earns more so can’t reduce his hours any more to allow me to work and childcare doesn’t make any sense financially and when I would rather be home with our daughter. We have no friends or family that could commit to childcare.

In an ideal world I would love to do 9-12, 4 days a week. (My husband works evenings) As I’ve become a mother my priorities have shifted and I just feel the need to work out a steady routine for my 1 year old dealing with separation anxiety. I’m thinking shorter days more often would help? Does anyone have any experience with this?

Also I do need to have this conversation with my workplace, I haven’t yet and that’s where I’ll start to see if they can accommodate these hours. But I don’t think they will. Alternatively there is a cleaning job elsewhere that provides these hours that I am considering.

My question is, am I the asshole for wanting to leave so soon after just returning? They supported me through covid and maternity, now I want to leave when they are struggling for staff?

You don't owe a company anything. Not one thing.

If you want to change jobs to benefit your family. Do it. You don't have to feel bad about it.
