Nhs banding pay cut for promotion

I have taken a specialist role which is a band 7. I now do very little clinical work but will have a lot more responsibility. A colleague is in a similar position but a month ahead. She has taken a £300 pay cut as she no longer does unsocial hours. We won't get an increment for two years and takes 5 years to get to top band 7. Heard on the grapevine that someone in the department ask to be put top of her band when she accepted her job. Kicking myself I didn't do this. Does anyone have any advice? I will approach my manager and recruitment and retention lead but wanted to find out more info first

Isn’t this quite common in the NHS? I know lots of nurses who stay at band 5/6 ward level because they earn more.

You are benefitting from not working unsociable hours.

If there is precedence it is worth asking, as £300 is a lot of money per month, but I’m surprised you didn’t realise before applying for the post.

The unsocial hours is not part of the salary for the grade, it is to compensate for working those unsocial hours. Totally normal.
