Does anyone work for Tesco's? Or on a Flexi contract?

I think I'm going to be offered an interview at Tesco (they've asked for a copy of my passport etc) but I'm a bit worried about the hours. There are set hours listed in the job advert but the position is also listed as "Flexi"

I had an interview at tesco once before and remember the interviewer mentioning that the "flexi" staff have to work which ever hours they are told to. Basically it's not so much "fexi" as "zero hours"

I'm only available in the evenings and weekends (which is the hours they are advertising) but I get the feeling that is not what they will actually expect. Does anyone work for tescos / have any experience of these types of contracts? I have a toddler and no available childcare so it could be a problem 😕

“Very little helps” is a site with Tesco employees on which should have up to date info on. I used to work there several years ago and I know flexi staff could be threatened with disciplinary/sacked if they refused to do hours a certain number of times. Did you just tick the hours you were actually available or tick ones outside of your availability too? Staff sometimes got the bare minimum of hours, other times ended up working loads.

”Continually turning down overtime during your availability window puts you in breach of contract. You don't need to be available 24 hours a day 7 days a week but if you are on a flexi contract you do have to show some availability.

However, if issued shifts outside your availability window should not happen. You can control this in two ways. You can limit your availability times and cap the amount of hours. You need to do both if you are being issued with hours you can't do.

If you are not being given enough notice you can also refuse due to commitments already made. It is just not easy to use that one just now unless you have childcare or career conflict. It's a balance that has to work both ways.”
