Applying for Civil service jobs without my manager knowing

I've recently passed probation in hmrc and my manager who's an SEO barely does any work while i'm doing the work of an SEO as an EO .... , with the proposed civil service cuts i wouldn't want to risk make things difficult in my current team but also want to explore opportunities both in my current department and others .... just wanted to know if my manager would at all be notified if i apply :

within hmrc
within hrmc but other directorates
other gov departments

i haven't registered an internal account as it requires manager's email to be entered, should i just use a normal external account to apply ? i would preferably want to stay within hmrc which makes this more difficult.

Thanks !

You'll need to use your internal email to register as not all jobs are currently available to external applicants (although that is changing). The new system doesn't tell you Manager if you apply for a role.

All the best op

Thank you! i would certainly not wan't to fail an interview and come back to my team with my tail between my legs .... although i've heard that some managers can opt not to 'release' people to other departments which sounds ridicules to me being new to the civil service.

You’re allowed to apply for jobs. You’re not in prison.

You’re allowed to apply for jobs. You’re not in prison.

Although certain companies or departments have different contractual agreements.

I don’t think they receive notifications when you apply anymore, I think this was changed a while ago. BUT I might have accidentally spelled my line manager’s name wrong when inputting her email, just in case.

The issue of not being released relates to vacancies in the same department. Say you’re in HMPPS in X town and a role in the same cluster in Y town comes up… you would have to discuss potentially getting released to it with your line manager as it’s the same ‘company’ and they can decide they can’t spare you. However, you wouldn’t for a role in another department. It’s hard to get used to the connections for a new civil servant but you’ll get used to it. Good luck!

In HMRC your manager should be supporting you wanting to advance and discussing it in your reviews or 1-2-1s! Looking at progression opportunities and promoting them to their teams!

Managers are no longer notified.

As someone noted above, just put their email address in wrong anyway if you are worried.

Also, unless there is actual specific guidance on moves being blocked etc, no manager has the right to stop you moving on promo, or moving on a level, either within your current dept or to another Govt dept.
