Work in a school, maybe new jobs available for me In September. When can I give notice so that I get paid for holidays. Its 4 weeks notice. Is the holiday counted so if I email notice in August will that month be my notice period, even though school is closed .

Do you have a copy of your contract?

LunaLoveFood · 30/06/2022 16:48

It depends what your role is in school. Most schools the policy for support staff etc is the half term before your end date.
As your contract is 4 weeks notice to leave at the end of August I would have expected you to hand your notice I would have expected you to hand your notice in 4 weeks before the last day of term, with the last day of term stated as 31st August.
This gives the school some opportunity to start recruitment.

My contract just says minimum notice I am required to give is 1 month. Doesn't say when or anything about term time.

You need to hand it in ASAP with last day stated as 31st August.

If you don't do it before the end of term you won't be able to hand in your notice until September as you can't guarantee the head will get the letter/email or however you do it.

I thought they would think it being odd for putting down 31st August and that I might want paying for holiday period

No it's generally the norm to put the end of the holiday because of the way term time only staff are paid.

SnowyLamb · 30/06/2022 17:45

You can hand in your notice whenever you're ready and state whatever date you wish as your last day e.g. if you write today you could still put 31 August or the last day before your new job starts as your last day. This would be very usual.

Equally, you could do it on 31 July, even if you're writing to a closed school. This does happen but school will appreciate it if you don't.

I'm assuming you're not a teacher, which is different.

Technically they should pay you over the holidays anyway as you have already worked all of those hours in the academic year. So doesn't really matter when you give your notice in.

whoami24601 · 30/06/2022 18:11

Support staff everywhere I've worked the notice is 1 month. I've always handed notice in to finish at the end of August. One of the (few!) perks 9f the job!

Thanks for all your replies.

When I handed in my notice the holidays didn't count towards my notice period. I handed in my notice just before the Christmas holiday (mid December) and couldn't start my new job till the end of Jan (6 weeks). I was a TA.

I work in HR in schools. You can give notice now and still get paid over summer (as you should). You just write in your letter that you are giving notice to finish on 31 August and your last working day will be *end of term. It would be better for the school to be able to get the advert out now and have some hope of replacing you in September. Depending on the school they might not even get your notice if you send it in the holidays.

Just to clarify I supervise the children at lunchtimes
