I was working in a job since 2016, hired a new girl in 2020 as a similar position and trainer her to do everything.

I went on mat leave in 2021 and just after the assistant manager left that I did most of the same work with and the girl I had just hired got the job without me even being asked or acknowledged.

But manager says if I didn't go on may leave, I'd have have got the job and it would have been mine! Thing is this girls so lazy and does no work but nothings done about it and now I'm back I'm expected to do more than her.

Sadly you do have to tell the Manager if the person is being lazy/not doing the job/bringing the business down.

I can only refer to my own experience in 2020 where the company at the time tried to employ someone above me as a means of eventually 'replacing me'. It deeply backfired and I ended up getting 'spoken' too. And then had to watch someone getting dismissed which wasn't easy or pleasant, when they genuinely couldn't see the problem.

Said person literally did nothing (I liked them) but they didn't do the job at all and at times I had wondered if they were actually trying their hardest to get dismissed if you know what I mean - it got to a point where I was carrying and covering up all this up/possibly getting lumped with the failings but eventually the customers started speaking out and when the boss had to sack this person 5 months on, I was certainly asked why I didn't speak up sooner.

If you were not told about the promotion opportunity and would have applied if you had not been on leave, this may be maternity discrimination. You should have been told and given the opportunity to apply for the job.
