Bank holidays part time hours

Looking to return to work part time (17.5 hrs a week) over Wednesdays Thursdays and Fridays

What happens with bank holidays that fall on a Monday? Will I miss out or is it worth me trying to have Monday as a working day

You get a proportion of them added to your annual leave to use when you like.

Livpool · 21/06/2022 12:07

I used to manage someone who what's p/t and didn't work on a Monday. It was the worst day as she had to take holidays for every bank holiday Monday.

If that is universal over all employers then I would say don't work on a Monday

thesparkthatbled · 21/06/2022 12:11

I agree with the above.

I work 22 hrs a week, and my leave allowance includes bank holidays, so if I worked Mondays I would have to book each bank hol off as leave, even though no one at my employer works on a bank hol.

I work Tue-Thu for this exact reason. Also most school inset days are Mon or Fri

Our holiday entitlement doesn't include BH hours

In which case you only get additional time off for the ones you would work like Good Friday, if that is what ft staff get. You should not be disadvantaged by being pt.

Freeme31 · 21/06/2022 12:18

Because I didn't work Monday i never got the Monday bank holiday as part of my leave (so realistically colleagues got an extra day off than me) but i was off anyway so wasn't bothered

usernamexxx86 · 21/06/2022 12:18

@LIZS would it not be better for me to work Mondays then? Xx

Do full timer workers get x days plus bank holidays or just x days and bank holidays are included (so 5.6 weeks and they can choose 4 weeks of these)

usernamexxx86 · 21/06/2022 12:19

@juneybean they get basic leave and then BH off anyway as closed

juneybean · 21/06/2022 12:22

So I suspect they get 5.6 weeks which is statutory minimum and get to choose 4 weeks of these. In that case you should also receive 5.6 weeks and more than likely get to choose more because less bank holidays will fall on your days off.

5.6 weeks for 5 days is 28 days. As there's usually 8 bank holidays they can choose 20 days.

5.6 weeks for 3 days is 16.8 days but rounded up to 17 days and this year 3 fall on your working days, so you get to choose 14 days.

burnoutbabe · 21/06/2022 12:23

The minimum is 28 which is often stated as 20 days plus bank holiday

You should get pro/rata this 28 days.

I am flexible and work 1 day a week so if bank holiday is a Monday, I work Tuesday instead. Could be an option for some people.

lilroo87 · 21/06/2022 12:23

Where I worked you got them given to you as holiday days so you could take them whenever you wanted

Nightnurse123 · 21/06/2022 12:25

My annual leave entitlement includes bank holiday hours.

My department closes in bank holidays but I don’t work Monday so I can use the annual
leave entitlement anytime I want to. People who don’t work Wednesday (for example) will have to use their annual leave entitlement.

So we all work four day weeks but on a week with a BH Monday, I just work Tuesday-Friday as usual with no extra days off, thus no annual leave used. My colleague who usually has Wednesdays off will work Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. They use a days annual leave for the BH Monday but they’ve only worked 3 days that week and I’ve worked four.

it really depends on your work policy.

I work for a bank so we are closed anyway

Does anyone know how Bank holidays should work with pt, when you work Mon-Fri?

I've recently started a pt job, 25 hours over 5 days, so I work 5 hours every day. I can't really understand how the annual leave entitlement works. Ft is 26 days, plus bank holidays.

If you are working 5 days a week you should get the same number of holidays as full time staff - your day off will just be a shorter day than a full time staff member

You get 5/7 of ft annual leave (assuming ft 35 hours pw). Probably best calculated in hours and deduct 5 hours for every day off.

Our holiday entitlement doesn't include BH hours

The legal minimum for full time staff is 28 days/5.6 weeks. This is comprised of 20 days leave plus 8 Bank holidays.

You will get a proportion of the above so your entitlement will include a pro rata amount of bank holiday hours.

Not working a Monday is a good thing when you are part time as you don't need to use leave to cover bank holidays that fall on a monday

in theory its simple and your days off are just the same as anothers and is just shorter.

However, most companies will do it in hours as then it much clearer what happens if you say work 9-2 but want to leave "at lunchtime" so taking 1 hour off rather than 0.5 of a day off like a full timer.

(the hours work much better if someone is doing different hours each day as well)

If you do it in hours then full time staff get the equivalent of 6.8 weeks holiday. 6.8weeks x 25 hours = 170 hours of holiday (which works out as 34 of your 5 hour days)

YouLando · 21/06/2022 20:57

Thanks for the replies. Sorry, probably should have started my own thread!

My employer doesn't seem to work it out in hours, so I think I'll have to get HR to clarify.
