Any what makes you love it so much?

I've lost the spark for my job and career. It all feels a bit meh but I'm not entirely sure why. So looking for some uplifting stories.

I'm an opiate recovery worker.

Can you tell me more please? I had an interview last week for the same job but didn’t get it…what interventions do you use? What is a typical day?

Thanks in advance

Teaching assistant with children who have a diagnosis of autism.
Hard work but I love it, lots of fun and it's wonderful developing relationships with the kids!

shrumps · 26/11/2022 08:11

I work in further education. It can be frustrating and funding is always an issue, but working with teenagers is never boring and I work with amazing people.

TreeTime22 · 26/11/2022 08:19

I'm a Forest School Leader. Always outdoors in nature, with amazing kids. It's a child led practice that you adapt and tailor to each participants needs and you never force anyone to do something they don't want to.
People think it's just about dens, campfires and bushcraft but it's more about each child's own journey, fostering independence and resilience and forging a connection with nature.

Lawyer. love it. (Although plenty of my colleagues don’t).

Robinkitty · 26/11/2022 08:22

I work in a school nursery with 2 year olds. I love my job, genuinely. Obviously I’d much rather be at home watching tv than standing outside in the cold for hours but the feel good factor is very high and the kids make me very happy!

Hoppinggreen · 26/11/2022 08:24

SME Business Advisor.
I work with a variety of companies so each one is very different and faces unique challenges. When I help them solve them and I see their success it’s amazing!

Organic horticulture - been doing it for 25 years and I can honestly say I never have a day I'm not happy to go to work. The only bits that I sigh over are the accounts and paperwork (self employed), but it's only a few hours a month.

Retired, it's a great job! Look after GC and do two volunteer jobs. Love my life

JaninaDuszejko · 26/11/2022 08:35

I'm a scientist, work in pharmaceuticals. We make life changing medicines. The people I work with are fabulous as well.

I'd assume the most rewarding jobs are those where you have a positive impact on other people's lives but what exactly people find most rewarding depends on personality.

MissTrip82 · 26/11/2022 08:36

ICU doctor.

It’s so hard. But the rewards of a successful resus, a good recovery or a peaceful death are incredible.

There is no substitute for meaningful work IMO. Which can take many forms.

Nurse therapist in CAMHS, love my job but hate the ever growing unrealistic expectations on the Google educated parents who come looking for medical reasons for shit poor parenting. Love the ones who are open, honest and help us to make their dc well again.

I'm a teacher and see so much of this!

Parents self diagnosing with adhd or ASD when it's very clear their child has no set boundaries at home.

Wow, if only all medical professionals knew how to read into the mind of a child like you! It would save years of assessments. 🙄 how judgmental

I work in sales. Earn a wedge, wine and dine people. Always pressure but varied, nice people. There’s a real shortage of good people, especially women, so my bosses are terrified of me being poached by the competition (they head hunted me).

there is never enough hours in the day but the rewards are remarkable. I pretty much choose when I work from home/office etc

MummyInTheNecropolis · 26/11/2022 08:48

I’m a primary school teacher. I absolutely love what I do and can’t imagine doing anything else.

Iwannabeadog · 26/11/2022 08:48

I am a physio - working mainly in pelvic health. I bloody love it, no day is the same and people are so fascinating - how their body and brain responds makes the job a daily challenge. I feel very lucky to have always wanted to do this job and then find that it is just as good as I hoped.

SobranieCocktail · 26/11/2022 08:49

Psychotherapist. Endlessly fascinating and rewarding job. I'm self-employed though, which can be hard, and the money isn't great.

PermanentTemporary · 26/11/2022 08:51

I'm a speech therapist working with adult inpatients, special interest in palliative care. I have never once been bored in a decade. It is draining at times and trying to provide some kind of service on 2 staff is basically impossible, but the patients and the teams are just so fantastic.

BeagleMumma · 26/11/2022 08:57

I'm a Reception Teacher.

I love the children, I love (most) of my colleagues, I love teaching.

I however don't love the parents, the long hours, the admin and OFSTED.

But luckily the things I do love outweigh those Grin

railwaysleepervegpatch · 26/11/2022 08:58

I'm a police officer. Finally after 24 years I'm in a role I absolutely love that gives me flexibility and a much better work life balance.

LaMariposa · 26/11/2022 09:07

Pricing Analyst. I spend my day staring at complex Excel/Radar models, working in programming languages, and solving problems in the above. I can sit and think and lose 3+ hours easily. I’m always learning something new. Hoping to start some of the actuarial exams next year.

I work mainly home based so it fits round childcare too.

spidereggs · 26/11/2022 09:12

I was a court solicitor for 25 years.

I'm now an alpaca trekker.

I'm now happy and adore my work.

violetcuriosity · 26/11/2022 09:16

Assistant headteacher in an SEMH school, they're hard work but my god do I love those kids

17CherryTreeLane · 26/11/2022 09:21

I am a Procurement Manager and I love it! Very varied work, and I get to deal with all sorts of people. I have a challenging but brilliant team which both stretches me and also gives me space to find projects that interest me. Took me a long time of negotiating deals to get here, but my whole career has been enjoyable.

fingfong · 26/11/2022 09:27

I run a foodbank. Always challenging, sometimes emotional, but we can make a real difference- we dont just do food, we've got a financial inclusion officer to help with various issues like debt management, budgeting etc, and we've got pastoral care too. The volunteers are fabulous and the support we get from the local community is amazing. I get really angry sometimes when I hear a client's story - so many people propelled into crisis through no fault of their own. It's a very thin line many of us tread between managing and suddenly not. Anyway, my job shouldn't exist, but since it does, I'm really glad it's me who's doing it!
