What to expect after emailing in resignation whilst on sick leave?

I'm on sick leave and have been for a couple of months. I decided to hand in my notice at EOB today by email and will likely be signed off sick for at least some, if not all, of my 3 month notice period. I emailed it to my manager with HR copied in.

What can I expect to happen over the next few days in response?

As a general rule you'll likely just get the standard response. Your manager should email back and say that your notice has been accepted. Beyond that it's just a case of following on with the sickness policy for reporting sickness and sending in sick notes until your contract with them has finished.
Hope you're feeling better soon OP. 💕

Unfortunately it’s probably true
However, it sounds like the right decision for you and I hope it helps your MH

Thank you for the deletions @MNHQ I was just coming on to report some dickheads being dickheads on the thread. Sorry that you’re having a shit time of it OP. I hope things improve for you very soon.

You’ll just ‘work out’ your contracted notice period as normal, except if you’re unfit for work during the notice period (get the GP to provide the sick note and email to your HR person and line manager) then you won’t be working it as normal, you’ll be on sick leave. Hope that helps. Take care.

Sorry for the asshat reply that came before mine, glad they deleted it. Some people really do just want to dig the knife in for whatever reason.
Really hope you're feeling better soon OP and the end of the job helps to get you back on track. You've got this. It will get better. Please don't worry about work, you aren't the first or last to be off sick during their notice period!!!

I'm interested in why you asked Mumsnet? You haven't said anything about the type of organisation you work for but if you're on 3 months notice it sounds like you're in a senior position. And if you've had a couple of months paid sick leave your employers sound public sector or unusually generous.

What do you think is going to happen OP? Do you think your employers are going to resist paying you 3 additional months sick leave when your intention is to leave them?

Hi, no not a senior position it's an entry-level position in the private sector. I've had statutory sick pay. I have only had one job before this and leaving there was different as I was on a fixed term contract so I just left when my contract was ending.

I asked because I'm not really familiar with what happens once someone hands in their notice if they are on sick leave. I wondered whether my manager would ask me to leave immediately rather than serve my notice or whether there was any issue with resigning whilst on sick leave. Sorry.

@A580Hojas lot of uncalled for and incorrect assumptions there.

@peonypeonypeony please ignore the unhelpful comments. What should happen is you get a letter confirming your last day., they may ask you to send in sick notes to cover your notice period or, if you are able, to return to work. You are entitled to your notice period, but they could offer Pay in lieu of Notice (PILON).

If you have any work equipment e.g. laptop/pass etc. they will usually ask you to contact your manager/ facilities to arrange its return. At the same time they will make arrangements for you to go into work and collect any personal possessions you may have left there.

Most people don’t leave on pay day so at the end of the month in which you leave you will get a final payslip for days worked. You may also get a payslip the following month for any annual leave owing, or this may be paid in the month you leave. A P45 will then follow.

ClinicallyProven · 17/06/2022 19:33

They might try to negotiate a settlement so that you leave before the end of the notice period. Something like agreed reference and pay in lieu of notice, but probably they'll just assume you'll be off until the end of your notice period.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 18/06/2022 09:01

Hi OP - I left my last job in similar circumstances and I'm afraid apart from a basic "we've accepted your notice" email I never heard from the company again!

whirlyswirly · 18/06/2022 23:00

Just an fyi that you will still have accrued and will continue to accrue leave while off sick and that these hours should be included in your final pay, at full, not ssp rate. That includes bank holidays accrued if your contract states this.

Don't agree to leave early as it stops the accrual, unless you want to be able to work elsewhere.
