Probation period anxiety

Hi there,

I'm just over 4 months of my 6 month probationary period. This is the first time I've ever had a 6 month probation period and I get bouts of worry! I've not had any bad feedback about my work or anything, it's more just me worrying.

The project I'm on isn't that busy, which isn't my issue. But one of the people I work with is due to retire so I think they are training me up to eventually take on his role.

The last person in my role, left just shy of the 6 month probation period mark. I don't think the job was right for her.

I guess I'm wondering if they wanted to let me go, they would have done earlier on?

I remember that terror hanging over me.
I’ve now been there 7 years!

I imagine they would have given some mention of concerns/performances if there were any issues, they wouldn’t just let you flounder on for 6 months. Try not to worry.

Thanks that's what I thought. Today my manager has forwarded on additional responsibility my way today, so I'm guessing if I was no good he wouldn't do that.

I just hate the uncertainty 😬 I really don't like being in a 6 month probation period! But then I guess my notice period is only 3 weeks more when I'm over the 6 month threshold anyway so I don't know why I'm getting my knickers in a twist over this.

Why dont you talk to your manager about it?

Cherryblossom200 · 07/06/2022 17:47

I guess I just want to show I'm confident with my ability and that I'm not worried about it.

Under 2 years of employment service you can be let go for any reason so passing probation offers no more protection legally other than access to company benefits (if there are any) and a longer notice period.

Are you having regular meetings with your manager? In my team you’d be having monthly meetings so would be told if any issues. We certainly wouldn’t just say someone hadn’t passed without addressing what the issues are and giving opportunity to improve. Doesn’t sound like there are any problems to try and relax
