Right to work

Hello,
I have applied for a job. It's completely remote because I live over 5 hours away. Now they tell me I must go to see them to prove my right to work. I asked if I could do it online but they refused. Surely this can be done online? It seems I must do a 10-hour journey just for them to see my passport.

It can be done online - whether this employer will accept it being done online is a different matter.

They will need to see the original documents and take copies. Can you courier them or use secure post?

They need to see original document and check that they are you.

It best for them to do it in person as they can be more confident that everything checks out.

Perhaps you could suggest you use it as a chance to do some other on boarding as well. Meet the team, set up IT, collect equipment etc so it's not a long trip for just one thing.

As Isdavethere says, the government don't require this at the moment, but this individual company may require it. Would they accept a couriered passport and a zoom meeting as a compromise?
