New job - what do I wear?!

I've just been offered a new job as a trainee accountant. I currently work in a job where I can wear whatever I like. Obviously this won't be the case with the new job so I would love some advice on what sort of thing accountants wear! Is it suits every day or would a smart dress and cardigan be ok?

I've had a look and a plain black/grey/navy suit seems to be impossible to find on the high street these days with so many people working from home!

Obviously since it's a trainee role the salary isn't high so I can't afford to be spending hundreds on new clothes but I don't think I have anything suitable at the moment.

Would really love any advice, thank you in advance!

(I'm a career changer in my 30s if that makes a difference)

I’d suggest you buy some smart-ish separates (eg grey/black/navy) - a skirt, trousers, not a jacket as it’s summer

where with a blouse on your 1sr day and see how it goes

or buy some smart stuff & return if not right for your office: in most corporate jobs everyone is much more casual now than before covid

A smart dress and cardigan sounds absolutely fine.

If I was you, I would buy a couple of dresses and cardigans and see what other people are wearing when you start.

Don't worry. As long as you're smart, you'll be fine.

What kind of firm are you training with? Most of the Big 4 have a dress for your day policy now, so jeans perfectly fine if you’re not seeing clients.

That said, I would still want to look smart for day 1. Most women now wear separates or dresses rather than suits I find. And female trainees definitely don’t wear suits from what I can tell. Smart trousers or a skirt with a blouse will be absolutely fine.

I agree with a PP about having a few things in but leave tags on so you can return if it's not the right vibe. If you can't afford much I would start up a capsule wardrobe, a few pieces that you can mix and match to make different outfits. X

Didn't you see what people were wearing when you had your interview? Is there anyway mention of a dress code or policy anywhere?

I recommend vinted for a new wardrobe! Lots of great stuff at bargain prices!
Good luck at your new job!
