Work

Does this warrant looking for something else?

I've been working in a not great job for a good six months now. Not horrific - no bullying or anything, but I'm viewed very much as the bottom of the chain and it sadly means I've not been treated particularly well since beginning to work there. They're also rubbish at passing work onto me and lots of the things I thought I'd be doing haven't transpired. I've raised this a few times but with not much response and whilst it's not been as awful as some other situations I've been in before, it is weighing me down a bit as I feel very disconnected from the team and quite isolated. It's also quite clear the directors are approaching burnout but are in denial about it and that's really bloody difficult to work with.

Anyway push came to shove today at a meeting set up weekly specifically so that tasks can properly be handed over to me. The meeting consisted of: 15 minutes of gossiping, 15 minutes of rambling, and then the two directors ended up in a big argument that lasted about 30 minutes, before hanging up on each other - I was just left in the zoom room like Shock what an earth just happened?! And I also wasn't given a single task to get on with. I've also not heard from anyone who was on the call.

I'm considering leaving but at the same time it's a fairly secure job and I can probably scoot by... but the culture is absolutely awful. I don't know what to do or if I'm overreacting? Help.

If work makes you unhappy look for something else. If you are happy being underutilised and can catch up on your own stuff during work hours it may be worth hanging on

Do you need to be given work, or could you find work to do?

I do have my own projects yeah, I'm a freelancer and work for this organisation 2x days per week flexibly over 5 days. But I actually want to do my job too, and I'm worried they'll somehow turn it back on me

Not really - it's not the kind of job where I can use much initiative unfortunately. I'm there specifically to assist the directors and they're responsible for passing jobs over to me. I've tried picking up general admin stuff in the past but I was told I wasn't to do that.

Bide your time.
It may be a different kind of stress but at least, from the sounds of it, you’re not being overburdened with a huge work load.
Polish up your CV and look for something else, in your own time.
Every cloud has a silver lining so get your ducks in a row and look for something which will be a tad more suitable to your talents.
Good luck.
