Maternity leave - on or off CV?

ChimChimeny · 22/05/2022 08:19

I'm updating my CV for the first time in a few years, and I'm not sure if I should highlight my maternity leave or just have a year gap in my work experience.

Thanks

Were you employed at the time? If in continuous employment just add the dates in the job and ignore the maternity leave. If you actually left the job completely, put it down as career break to raise family or something like that.

If you left the job to be at home then yes.
If you stayed employed then no

What @123walrus said, if you were still employed while on Mat leave then it's just part of that employment period.

Were you employed during your leave, i.e. you were on maternity leave from a specific job or company you then returned to? If so, it doesn't go on your CV. It's just a part of your continuous employment.

If you didn't have a job during this time and it was a full year or more then I'd give it a single line along the lines of "career break caring for family".

Thanks all, very helpful.

I was still employed by the company but we work in different teams within a function (I'm a buyer) so if I understand it should say:

Buyer for Wine
April 2013 - November 2015

Buyer for Cheese
November 2009 - April 2013

(Maternity leave was 1st April 2012 - 1st April 2013)

Yes, exactly. You were still employed throughout the period so that's what your CV should say.

Definitely don’t add the maternity info in brackets

ChimChimeny · 22/05/2022 09:49

@CountessOfSponheim and everyone else, thank you.

I haven't needed a CV for many years due to internal moves so this is all a bit alien to me 😁

Agreed, otherwise cv’s would be littered with gaps of mat leave, parental leave, etc. If you were employed (even if on SMP/unpaid) then just include that in the date range.
