Interview tips when you always seem to be so close to getting the job

Hi all
you might have seen my post in employment issues I have managed to secure a job interview with the civil service that at eight roles available it's in the DCMS for policy adviser.

I also have two more interviews for senior policy and public affairs advisors next week.

I had two interviews this week the feedback was I would have been given the job had they not had candidates who had experience of what the successful candidate would be working on.

is there any tips and tricks to prevent this occurring and convincing them to employ me as I really need a job.

Thanks

Unfortunately, it's one of those situations where you can't really control the calibre of other candidates. I'd still take it as a positive that they liked you, it's just that there was someone they liked more for the role. It happens a lot.

You mention "I really need a job". Are you passionate about your chosen field? Or is it just any job you want? Are you currently working? Sometimes employers can sense if you're not committed and you're just after a salary.

Hi I am only applying to jobs that I have a genuine interest in all within my field of working.
I really need a job as the CEO of my current place is sacking everyone, I did do a post on this so it's kind of urgent I get out. as I can't survive on SSP

@MotherOfRatios Why is he sacking everyone? Is there any possibility at all of keeping your job?

She's quite a bully, One of my employees also off on sick leave because she was suicidal. She has sacked my line manager and made it clear if I return I am to be sacked as well.
it has been operating for 3 years and no staff has stayed longer than six months.
unfortunately she likes the idea of hiring people with expertise and then when it comes to doing your job she doesn't like it so she sacks staff

If you have evidence of that treatment, and threat of dismissal, then you might have a legal claim so speak to CAB or your union.

As for the other job feedback, not much you can do other than get the relevant experience. If you can't do that, apply for something else.

Try 'reach volunteering' as there are loads of unpaid jobs, often in areas you may never have thought e.g. marketing or research and some can be done remotely for an hour or two a week. Have a look as you could put this on your CV.

Dont' just look at the civil service. look at charity jobs, the guardian jobs, indeed and higher education jobs on jobs.ac.uk

Unfortunately as we're all in probation nothing can be done.

my time in the charity sector has been rough, I'm looking to avoid charities. I'd like some stability but I think that can be hard when working in policy/public affairs.

I mentor young people which takes up a lot of my time and I'm starting my masters soon, it's not that I'm lacking in skills according to feedback it is purely the area is X and I haven't worked in that which is frustrating as why interview if you know what you're looking for.
