Hey all! I'm looking for a bit of advice on a career pivot. I'm a qualified solicitor, but went into a "individuals" specialism on qualification rather than a "business" specialism. I did that for a few years but had to leave due to a very toxic work environment, difficult caseload etc causing general burn out. I've taken a few months out of direct practice now, but still work within the legal sector but more commercially.

I'm now thinking about my next steps. I'm mid thirties and want to still build a career for myself back in legal practice. I'd like to move into commercial law (which I did during my training) but don't know the best way to go about it. There are courses I can take which I plan to do to boost my CV. I'm also happy to take a junior role to get my foot in the door. Am I too old for work experience/shadowing opportunities? Any other tips on how to make myself look appealing to prospective employers? It's been so long since I've done any of that I'm just not sure!

Any advice from anyone who's done something similar would be greatly appreciated! Smile

Hi @RosesareRed342 not in the legal sector but after a career break with kids I've approached someone for a work experience and did some voluntary work in a field related to my original degree.

Ultimately, I've decided to do something else, but had I wanted to stay there would have been opportunities and it was a great experience.

Just research your field and pick someone who is a nice person plus good in their profession, preferably quite senior.

And has a team of people to learn from and discuss courses with. You'll likely work with team members anyway not the senior person themselves.
