Pre employment checks

Bluemoom · 10/05/2022 19:01

Given a job with RBS and now they want to perform preemployment checks. They have asked for proof of my employment for the past 2 years - in the form of P45 or payslips or signed contract.

I have this information for the last 6 months. Before that though the PC I stored this on has crashed and I lost everything.

My old employer hasn’t responded to my emails asking for copies (if they still have them).

I have asked RBS if they will accept bank statements showing payments in to my account as well as my HMRC tax records showing the months I was employed and how much I was paid by the companies.

They haven’t come back to me yet either though. I’m panicking I’ll have lost this shiny new job through not keeping good enough records. Do you think what I’ve offered should be enough proof? I can also provide references from the last 2 years as well.

I have also just realised that my passport is 9 months of of date. This isn’t going to work is it? 😭

Does the job involve you being well organised?

Bluemoom · 10/05/2022 20:17

Haha that’s a fair point @fucketyfuckwit. Believe it or not I am well organised at work. Completely goes to pot in my personal life

They will want to confirm how you got your income, they can check if the dates you give line up with HMRC records if you don't have proof

Cuphalffullor · 10/05/2022 20:20

My son had nightmares with employment checks as he’d worked in hospitality, had very little paperwork and had sometimes been paid cash. Bank statements were accepted where he’d been paid through the bank. He passed in the end but it was stressful.

Cuphalffullor · 10/05/2022 20:21

And I may be wrong but I don’t think they can get your info from HMRC

Bluemoom · 10/05/2022 20:22

Thank you @40sNonBlondes. Do you know if jobs will accept an out of date passport for ID? Citizens Advice website says you can use Birth Certificate and NI document but the lists given by RBS don’t seem to allow for this.

I am going to try and get a fast track passport but it seems like there aren’t any spaces yet at the moment.

I would print out your HMRC account and let them see that. Surely there's nothing more acceptable than their records?!

For future reference though, set yourself up a One Drive, get the app and photograph or save each payslip there as you get it. I do this as I'm disorganised with personal paperwork and it's much quicker for me to photograph and shred than for me to put it to one side and file.

Bluemoom · 10/05/2022 20:23

That’s a good idea @BridesmaidPanic . Just need to sort out my out of date passport and I’m getting somewhere. (And need to become a more organised person generally). 😂

As for the passport I wouldn't worry. Let them see it. It's still proof of id, no matter if it's out of date or not. Just because it's expired doesn't mean you can change your identity!

MNHD · 10/05/2022 20:25

I've had similar nightmares OP, although not for banking job but other where DBS required they wouldn't accept expired passport. Do you have previous P60s (mine are always sent paper to home address) that you could use in place of payslips? Otherwise keep pestering your old HR/payroll departments. And yes set up a cloud site for documents including scans of ID photos etc...

40sNonBlondes · 10/05/2022 20:26

I started work for a financial organisation in March and these checks are required by any similar organisation by the FCA. My (massive international company) did indeed check with HMRC directly on my behalf. AFAIK the passport was required to be in date/valid or could use Driving Licence then another proof of address instead eg utility bill

Bluemoom · 10/05/2022 20:28

I only have a Provisional License which apparently can’t be used as it has to be a full license.

I used passport as mine has a few months left on it, but in that case I would just give them the one you have like @BridesmaidPanic says

My passport is about 15 years out of date in my maiden name but all employers have accepted it with a copy of birth & marriage certificates

40sNonBlondes · 10/05/2022 20:35

How long until the proposed start date? I had an issue (incorrect record on my credit report that needed removing) I had 2 weeks between interview and start date and instead of withdrawing the offer they were prepared to delay the start date. Fortunately I managed to supply other proof for that one at the 11th hour but worth consideration if nothing else works with the ID

Bluemoom · 10/05/2022 20:38

Thanks @40sNonBlondes. Proposed start date is the 13th June. So hopefully will be enough time to sort my ID out if I have nothing acceptable

Ok, there's time to play with. I'd tick the box on the passport renewal to say the old one is lost. From the passport thread on here supporting docs and the old passports are taking much longer to be returned than the new passport.

MyBottleOfRibena · 10/05/2022 20:53

A driving license is not proof of right to work, but an out of date passport is accepted

HundredMilesAnHour · 10/05/2022 20:58

I'm surprised RBS only want 2 years. All the banks I've worked for go back a minimum of 5-6 years. A couple used to go back through your entire career. It wasn't pleasant.

Chocnuts · 10/05/2022 20:59

A UK passport is fine for standard right to work checks if it's expired, as long as it's still a true likeness.

It sounds like your getting some sort of DBS /further background check as well though?

Bluemoom · 10/05/2022 21:02

I think so @Chocnuts they keep calling it a PES whatever that means
