Have you ever (or do you now!) worked in a bar - on the "last" shift of the night??

And would you do it again??

Used to work nights - 3 x 9 1/4hr shifts a week (often 4 or even 5 shifts some weeks though!) and didn't mind it too much - it was just my employers that I didn't like.

Have since resigned and am looking for a new job.

Seen a bar not too far away from me (about 10 minutes walk) that is advertising for Bar staff to work 4/7 nights a week from 12pm-4.30am. No experience nessecary blah blah blah.

Now it's tempting - I can survive on very little sleep (3/4hrs is quite normal for me !). I'd probably get in around 5am - and could get 4/5hrs sleep in before DH went to work - then I could have a snooze on the sofa after the DS's went to bed (8pm) until DH got in from work around 10pm if I needed to. Wouldn't need to leave the house until gone 11.30 - so DH and I would still get to see each other then (old job was literally he came in, I went out!).

And of course I'd be at home (apart from the first few hours of the day) with the DS's the rest of the time.

Question is - what is it REALLY like working in a bar??? Do you get loads of abuse from customers (especially at the "end" of the drinking night?). Do those hours sound workable with the amount of sleep I can survive on????

Anything else I should think about? Ad says you can go straight in and speak to the employer without an appointment - and I could do that tomorrow......

Check on what time it shuts, may be relied on stock up after closing so may not actually leave at 4.30?

Do they mean 12noon?

TheIceQueen · 11/01/2008 13:09

not sure what time they close - I never get out to a pub LOL - and have never been into this one anyhow. I'm

Job description just says

"Duties to include collecting glasses, customer service, light cleaning duties, keeping bar area clean and tidy, cash handling, some light lifting and all associated tasks"

I'm sure they're not open that long - don't think I've ever been into that particular pub (walk past it almost every time I go to town though) - but I know that our (1) nightclub closes at 4.30 - and it's pretty much the only place that's open at that time.

no pretty sure they mean 12 midnight - it's advertised as 16+hrs a week.

Just trying to find out what time they close (without calling - as I hate phonecalls ) - have discovered in the process that the person I have to speak to is the chairman of the Pub Watch scheme in our town though LOL.

Can't be any worse than working the late shift in McDonalds... I've done that. Provided your co-workers are fun it could be ok.

TheIceQueen · 11/01/2008 13:19

lol twelve - I've never work in a McDonald's - and the clientèle of our local one I think it's one job I would turn down

Well - this may sound like a rather odd way to try and determine clientèle - but they appear to favour showing Rugby over Football - as they showed all the world cup matches last year......as opposed to the skanky pub in town that shows all the football matches

If the place closes at 4am or thereabouts it will most likely have doormen, they will be the ones worrying about chucking out at drinking up time. They will back up the staff an step in if anyone is abusive and if it is a decent place they won't tolerate it anyway.

Best thing would be to go one night and ask yourself if you can stand the music and how comfortable you are moving about in the place, if you would be collecting glasses you will need to get comfortable doing this. See how the doormen treat the punters and how they talk to you and the staff. Most are very protective of the other staff and will take no messing.

If no time to visit then just apply and go for an interview, you will see how they are set up, how the staff interact (if any are in) and they can tell you what to expect.
