Will current job be told the day I interviewed for new job?

I told my boss I needed Annual Leave at much shorter notice than would usually be granted it because of a family emergency. I took a week as I was interviewing for several positions. One has now offered me the job (3 weeks later). But will my current boss find out the date I actually interviewed for the job? I hate lying and I’m now spiralling that the lie will be found out and the job offer rescinded.

How would your current employer know when you interviewed?

I suppose if new job tells them when checking references?

I really don't think they would put the interview date down when asking for a reference.

saltedcaramelanything · 08/05/2022 11:05

They definitely won't do that.

I would be really surprised if the person asking for references would even know. I would also be surprised if your current HR department would care.

They won't mention the interview date, it will be a pro-forma.

However, if you don't like lies, why did you lie? A week of emergency leave is a bit of a whopper!

Usually references are not checked till your successful unless it’s roles working with vulnerable people if it’s a office/ corporate setting hr don’t usually bother with references till candidate accepts and your offer is caveated with ‘receipt of satisfactory references’
they also don’t usually disclose the date and time of the interviews when asking for references
in my experience and I’ve worked in hr and management roles for along time

would you be handing your notice in on receipt of a new job offer? Is your concern because you said ‘family emergency’? But it was actually interviews? Ultimately your leave was approved and if you choose to fit an interview in at that time that’s your business

I don't quite get it. You think your current employer will put 2 and 2 together and realise your family emergency was actually a cover story for going to interviews, will find out who your next employer will be (through the reference process maybe?) and will tell them you lied about your reason for wanting time off, and your next employer will rescind the job offer because you lied? It's highly unlikely, any of it, imo. Either that current employer will care, or that they will say anything or that future employer will care. It is entirely normal for people to want to keep an interview secret until the outcome is known. If current employer had not wanted to give you time off at short notice, they should have said so then. Honestly, I think you will be fine.

Worked in HR for years and never seen interview date mentioned between the two employers.

Even if it were, you've done nothing wrong as you took annual leave. Taking a sickie could look bad if it came out, but annual leave is fine.
