Boss blocking development

Hi all, just looking for advice on how best to handle this, I recently had my appraisal where my requests for training were partly not authorised l like I wanted a certain level of training, and was told I couldn’t, on another course I was told I couldn’t take part at all. However speaking to a colleague, on the same level as myself , she’s had both the courses authorised and agreed. The courses are needed for us to both get a promotion. It feels very unfair and unjust and really about who’s face fits. I want to approach my manger about how I feel and understand the reasons why, what would your next steps be?

Well I think the take home message is they aren't going to promote you.

Can you jump ship?

mightyducks · 07/05/2022 11:50

Yes can jump ship , my skills are very much in demand at the moment, might mean more travel etc - feel like I want to make my point though about how unfair I think things are ? I do I just leave?

I think you need to address this disparity formally. It might be that there is only funding for one. Did the other person ask first?? Perhaps the answer will be that they will support you to do it in 6/12 months.

If they won’t support your development vote with your feet.

If you are prepared to leave if they don’t support you, then I would look into other roles and talk to other places about a role.
If you are confident about walking into another job, but would prefer to stay then use this as ammo to talk to your boss

“I have been unhappy that this company is not supporting my career development and have been approached by another company ( don’t mention the name) . I would prefer to stay if my current role could be made more atttactive. Pay rise plus training opportunities… It will cost them more to recruit and train someone new. Go to your boss’ boss if necessary.

That's amazing news OP!

I think move if you can. Why waste your hard work on a company that isn't going to invest in you?

Get out there and make the move!
