Hi, I need some advice for trying to get my p45.

I resigned from a previous post 3 weeks ago due to bullying and bad management. I started a new job more or less straight away and have asked my previous employer to post me my P45. He has told me he will when he contacts his accountant. I've still not received this and each time I try to contact him I just get abuse. He's a nasty person and I was only in employment with him for 2 months before realising this. I don't want to contact him anymore but obviously need my P45. Dh has said he would ring him but I don't really want us to make contact with him anymore. Who do I need to contact about this?

Thanks

You don't really need a P45. You will be put on an emergency tax code when you get paid in your new job, but within a few weeks, HMRC will tell your new employer your correct tax code and you will get a refund of any tax you have overpaid.

Years ago, it could take months for HMRC to correct your code, but now with RTI, it is usually within a few weeks so your P45 is not as important as it used to be.

You don't need the P45, nor should you be put on an emergency tax code. You just need to complete a P46 from your new employer verifying that this is now your only job and you'll be taxed accordingly.

Thank you for the advice, I'll mention the P46 this week.

It is now called the New Starter Checklist.
You can download one to print out, then give to payroll.
