Jury service

I’ve been summoned to serve as a juror, originally they said Upto 10 days but after attending the first day today, I’ve been informed it will last 6weeks.

I’ve let me employer know & they have stated they will be objecting to this. What is a good enough reason for them to have a objection?

I work in the retail sector and there is enough employees.

Impact on profit and business sustainability?

A good reason would be you are a teacher and your students are about to start their exams/you have to mark coursework by an imminent deadline.

Or you are a key person in a business who can’t be easily replaced fir that length of time.

They cannot object.

You can apply to be excused or to have your jury service deferred. They can write a letter of support if you apply. They cannot apply on your behalf. They can talk to you and express their concerns about damage to the business, but they cannot put undue pressure on you. If they try to force you to apply, they will be in contempt of court.

They must allow you time off for jury service, but this could be unpaid.

Thank you for the replies. I don’t think without me being there the business can’t run, we manage on a regular basis with 1-2 people down. Normally the business just calls cover from another store.

my company all pay 10 days jury service, the remaining I would have to recover from the court.

prh47bridge I thought the same, but my manager seems to think they can object to the court so I will let them do what they need, but I will not be pressured to back down from jury service as it is a experience I want to have.

I’ve just returned home from court (serving as a juror), I think I may have food poisoning - I’ve vomited as soon as I got in & got diarrhoea. I’m not sure I’ll be well enough to attend tomorrow, will they excuse me? Or if I call in sick would they completely take me off the case?

Rather than ask here call the court and ask. They should have given you contact details. If you are calling in sick they may ask for a doctors certificate.

BigFatLiar I’ve already called them but there was a answer machine and they haven’t called back, hence why I posted on here. I’m waiting for a call back!
