Hi all,
Name changed for this, long term MN user.

I have an interview later this week for an assistant manager of a care home. I have been a carer in many settings (hospital, private homes and nursing homes) for over 10 years so I feel confident I know about the practical aspects of delivering the expected standard of care, however this is my first interview for a management position. How can I demonstrate my management skills if I have not had prior experience? I can talk about orientating new staff, helping with certain tasks for my current team leader etc but I am really unsure if I can really demonstrate my ability to lead a small team of carers. What questions should I expect to be asked? If any (care home ) managers or assistant managers are able to give me any insight on how I could show I could do the duties outlined for this role it would be much appreciated (standard care home manager expectations, I do not want to link the job description in case one of the interviewers in a MNetter!) . I have looked over all of the relevant information regarding the legislation and codes of conduct, I am just worried about the scenario based questions as I haven’t had management experience.
Thank you in advance!

I wouldn't worry too much about not having had any management experience. I assume the interviewers already know that you don't, but are obviously willing to give you a go hence why they have invited you in for an interview. Everyone has to start somewhere.

You listed a few examples yourself there about training new staff etc, so bring those points up. Assisting the current leader is a good one to talk about and expand on.

Good luck. You've got this!

They know you don't have management experience from your application, they obviously can see relevant qualities and experience :) I agree that the examples you have listed are good ones, I'd use those and then be prepared if they ask what would you do in x scenario.

Thank you both. The skills for care suggestion was helpful, a lot of resources to look over. I have been thinking about different scenarios they will be likely to ask about and I’ve come up with a few, feel more prepared now. Thanks again

Maybe look up some leadership and management courses and see if you’d be interested in working towards them?

You could say that your level of experience means you understand best practise in a range of difficult situations and can advise and lead staff on this, ensuring both residents and workers resolve any difficult, dangerous or sensitive situations swiftly and effectively.

You could say you have observed which activities and care plans best enhance residents lives.

Etc. Think about what you learned from being on the shop floor, as it were, and how that translates to good management practise. Which homes you worked in felt well run to you and why? Which managers were most effective and why? Did any make decisions you doubted but on reflection realised were the best way forward for the home overall. Etc.

Just analyse your experience to see what knowledge you gained from it. There will be loads of examples.
