Civil service job offer question

questionaboutcivilservice · 13/04/2022 17:02

I have a provisional job offer from the civil service, and I would like to discuss disability adjustments for the role.

Do I accept first and then request these afterwards?

Or ask to talk to them first to give them a chance to still see if I'm the right candidate for them (so they can withdraw the offer if needed)?

Not an expert but I'd have thought it was illegal for them to withdraw the offer due to you having a disability. Not sure of the limitations of this but assume youir disability isn't so major that it needs completely impossible adjustments.

If it were me I'd accept the role enthusiastically and in the next breath say that you'd like to discuss some adjustments to account for a disability, who is the correct person to discuss these with?

I'd probably craft a response which makes the point that I'm keen and ready to make this work and I'm showing my integrity by raising this early on and being upfront from the word go.

Assume it'll be fine, I'm sure it will but its amazing g what a difference setting the right tone at the beginning of the discussion makes.

Don't even consider for a second that this will be a blocker, and very definitely don't offer it to them as a blocker.

Thank you, that's really helpful Smile

No I think the accommodations should be fine, I just know some employers in the past haven't been sympathetic and perhaps overthink things.

Civil servant here. Congratulations on the job offer. You should absolutely accept it and ask about the process for requesting reasonable adjustments.

Don’t quit your current job at this point though. You need to wait until you’ve passed any security checks and have a confirmed start date.

@teacuppa is right. What you could ask for is a Workplace Adjustment Passport where you document the barriers you face and the agreed reasonable adjustments.

Civil servant here, I agree entirely with @teacuppa

Thank you all! I accepted the offer on the website, and then spoke with my future manager who is really supportive and is going to look into the formal adjustments Smile I'm so glad, I was so worried about it and an now very relieved.
