Accepted a job offer, now been offered another job - help

I’m so stressed out. I accepted a job offer 6 weeks ago and about to start next week sometime, just waiting on date. Now I’ve been offered the other job I went for and I don’t know what to do. It’s just typical. Both are good jobs but for different reasons.

Job 1
Local - no commute/travel costs
More hours - 3 days a week
I’ve done a days trial and everyone is v nice, busy admin role.

Job 2
30 min drive each way
Parking an issue for the day shift.
Dream role
Less hours - 2 days (admin role - 1 is a night shift)
Bit more money after travel expenses (£150 more a month maybe)

No idea how I’ll cope with nights as I’ve never done them)

It really is head vs. heart, I don’t know what to do. I feel so bad and stressed and need to decide as it’s not fair on the company.

Which would you choose given the info above. I’m driving myself crazy.

I'd choose job 1. Easier with the lack of commute, no parking issues, easier to work days than nights and you've met the team.

£150 a month extra will be worth less due to petrol and parking.

£150 a month extra will be worth less due to petrol and parking.

The extra money is after expenses, it’s not a vast amount I know but it is less hours too.

Job 1 is def the east option I realise, just not sure if I’m settling, but job 2 will be unknown until I try it.

Definitely job 1.

Ohquietone · 07/04/2022 19:02

Any chance of doing both at once to get a feel and see which one you like?

WhatsitWiggle · 07/04/2022 19:03

I'd do job 1. Why does an admin role need to work nights? 1 day night shift will mess your body clock.

QueenofBrickdon · 07/04/2022 19:04

Can you do both?

WinterSpringSummerorFall · 07/04/2022 19:06

Job 2, dream role. Less hours. More cash.

Viviennemary · 07/04/2022 19:06

I would choose job 1. Woudn't do a nightshift. They are a killer.

PenelopePufferfish · 07/04/2022 19:08

Ooooo so tricky. Could Job 2 lead to something reasonably quickly which didn't have the night shift?

I've done a bit of shift work, also a 30 min drive away, and it's not for me. It messed up my sleep, my eating patterns and I was all over the place. But some people love it, so maybe I'm projecting.

Really tricky one though.

I'm now doing set hours in somewhere which is a 30 min walk from my house and the difference is incredible.

But "dream job"! Hard to say no to that

PenelopePufferfish · 07/04/2022 19:09

My petrol bill is close to nothing now too and that is a significant saving

Sunshineandrainbow · 07/04/2022 19:09

Doing one night shift with days will be hard.

OhSoStranger · 07/04/2022 19:10

Both !

pinguwings · 07/04/2022 19:11

Is that one night shift and one day shift a week? That's a killer. I did it for 9 months having done regular nights for years and would not do it again.

FrankGrillosFloof · 07/04/2022 19:12

I don’t think you should under estimate the impact working a nightshift can have. Lots of studies show that it plays absolute havoc with your internal rhythms and can lead to poorer health.

HomeHomeInTheRange · 07/04/2022 19:13

The night shift will use up the following day for sleep.

TooManyPJs · 07/04/2022 19:14

Job 1. Night work is really bad for your health. Not worth it.

Horological · 07/04/2022 19:16

OP, why is job 2 your 'dream job?' eg. If it is something you really enjoy, that you've always wanted to do, is a step up from what you have done before, that will feel like an achievement and will look good on your CV then it's worth doing.

PurplePansy05 · 07/04/2022 19:16

Job 1.

Thoosa · 07/04/2022 19:18

OP, why is job 2 your 'dream job?

Yes that’s my question, too, because on what you’ve said, 1 looks better

Is it the organisation? Sector? Progression opportunities?

ThisIsTheGreatestShow · 07/04/2022 19:18

One for sure! Nights are a strange beast to handle

Supersee · 07/04/2022 19:19

One. I do a mix of night shifts and day shifts and nights are a killer. Dying to get off them.

Madcats · 07/04/2022 19:20

Is there any chance you could see how you would cope with an overnighter (at home - try to do something similar to the role (in terms of physical activity or brainpower) without annoying the rest of the house?

How would you cope with the rest of the week? It might be really easy, but maybe not if you have school age kids.

Pepsipepsi · 07/04/2022 19:22

"I have no dream job because I do not dream of labour".

Go for job one for the no commute and day shifts. Even one night shift will really mess up your sleep pattern and health. Not worth it.

waltzingparrot · 07/04/2022 19:24

Job 1 and look for a local dream job.
