Need to hand notice in - boss not in office

Hi all, so I have been offered a new job yay!

I currently work for a small company, it is just me, my boss, and another guy who works from abroad. I was offered the job on Monday and I told them I won't be able to hand my notice in until the following Monday because my boss is away. She is away on business so not a holiday or anything, but she has just told me that she won't be back until Wednesday next week, I really need to give to notice sooner rather than later, what do I do 😬

I definitely can't just send an email or anything like that, I have a very close working relationship with my boss, but we aren't friends as people or outside work or anything like that

I have no idea how she's going to react to me handing in my notice but I can take a guess that it won't go well and I am dreading it! But at the same time I really want to get it over with!

Can you arrange a call with her, tell her verbally and then email the notice?

AlisonDonut · 07/04/2022 10:00

You book a call with her and email your resignation over after you tell her on the phone.

If she won't take a call, you apologise in the email that you wanted to do it face to face, failing that a call, but as neither were an option you have to do it by email.

Make sure you've signed your contract with your new company first!

I had 1 day off & came back to a resignation letter on my desk from my deputy. She was somebody that i thought i was very clise to on a professional & a personal level. We did spend time together outside of work & it was very hurtful not to be told to my face.

I was pretty close with my last manager, but she was away/off sick when i had to hand my notice in and I needed to kick off the process ASAP.
So I emailed her and said "I'm so sorry to do this by email and understand how poor it probably looks, but I'm sure you can appreciate that I need to initiate the process ASAP...BLAH BLAH...I'll put some time in for us next week so I can speak to you properly".
She got back to me with a really nice message.

I can't wait until next Wednesday to do it though unfortunately

No that's understandable. Can you give her a ring & tell her then put it in writing so she's at least had the heads up.

Call I suggest, follow up with an email.
