Leaving teaching for software development?

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone here has changed careers into software development?

It will mean saving up and leaving my job entirely. I’ll be studying a 4 month course and then job hunting.

I’ve been teaching for 5 years but have realised I’m too introverted, anxious and the job doesn’t suit my personality. Ideally I would be working from home and in control of my own work. Software development seems a great new challenge and allows for remote working which is suited to my needs.

Anyone else introverted and changed careers because of it?

Hello @Codeconverse

I literally could have wrote your post myself!

I went into teacher training but didn't pursue it for exactly the same reasons. I am currently working from home in a finance based role but I am working towards software/web development.

What course is it that you are looking to do? As I have been doing self-study alongside work.Udemy, codecademy, YouTube have been really useful in building up knowledge of computer languages, coding etc.

Do it. If you are good you'll make a packet. It's a really good job, my friend's husband does it.

This is me, I am introverted and being a teacher and forcing myself to be outgoing and friendly, is really exhausting, I have been teaching for five years as well, I need to leave but also I dont know if I can affor the pay cut

Kudos to those who are introverted and have managed 5 whole years in teaching! I know a few introverts and they would never even think about going into teaching.

As for software development, go for it but only IF you have a genuine interest.
I wanted to go down the coding route as it sounded interesting, but when I took a course on it, I was so bored and had zero interest in the work at all. If you genuinely love it, you'll have a flexible career ahead of you. Software development jobs tend to offer hybrid or WFH options. If you're doing it JUST for the benefits though, you'll be bored.

I’d go for it but 4 months is not a long course to learn software development

Do entry level jobs pay enough?
