Umbrella company for ad hoc work

I have a 12 month part time contract where I will be paid via payroll. On my day off I want to do ad hoc consultancy work but have been told I would need to work via an umbrella company. Can you do both? How does this work for tax codes etc. Feels overly complicated… thanks

Who would the consultancy work be for? Your own individual clients or the same place you have a contract?

If it's just ad hoc work you would just need to register as self-employed - not sure why you would need an umbrella company. Aren't those for people trying to fiddle tax when they're not really self-employed?

PS I am a self-employed contractor

Might be a condition of employment? DH is a Contractor and he has been told he was to go inside IR35 or use an UC. He’s turned it down

Would be work for a different company as and when needed. I want to do it via a consultancy as they cover the insurance etc. Other option is limited company but that’s too much effort to set up and maintain where level of work is not guaranteed.

Can you not just pay the insurance myself. It would be tax deductible, you then just fill out a tax return at the end of the year and take off any expenses related to that self-employment. You can also deduct training courses, professional fees etc.

Much easier than trying to set up an umbrella company (which HMRC may well decide is dodgy at some point).
