Loud music

I started a new job three months ago and on the whole I really enjoy it. I work in a small office with three other employees, one being my manager

The office is very small, think a bit bigger than your average three bed semi detached house's front room

The problem I have is that my manager plays loud music in the office and it's effecting my concentration. This morning he started playing loud music with a lot of bass after we'd only been in work fifteen minutes

After a while I actually had to leave the office as I could feel a headache coming on. I've spoken to my colleagues and they feel the same as me. None of us feel we can talk to our manager about it as he's not very approachable and he has quite a temper at times

The music isn't played all day but it could be for a couple of hours then he'll switch it off for a bit. I can't go on like this. I need to be able to concentrate and focus on my job. One part of my job involves arranging external contractors to do deliveries for us and if I make mistakes and get the details wrong it will have a big knock on

I really want to tell my manager that the music is too loud and I'm struggling to concentrate on my job but I don't have much confidence to approach him. I also don't really want to mention that my colleagues feel the same, I'd rather just tell him about me

I've even started looking for jobs online. If it was him and he's not happy about something he'd just say Oi, turn that bloody music down for example

I'm quite new and I don't know how he would take me telling him but I really need to. How would you go about it? I actually like most of his music but only if it was quieter. When he has a day off the atmosphere is always so much nicer and my colleagues always say how good it is that he isn't in

I would invest in a very large pair of noise cancelling headphones and play white noise.

It's your boss who needs the headphones in my opinion.
How selfish and unaware he sounds.
It's not acceptable at all.

As it's impacting your work and potentially the profits if you get something wrong because you can't hear properly on the phone, could you mention this to him and suggest he gets himself some headphones.

The coward in me would suggest an anonymous note left on his desk from "all of us" so that no one is singled out for raising the issue as it sounds as if he'd be a bit shitty about it all.
Or you could all bring in your own music - all different styles naturally, and play it very loudly and see how he likes it.
