I work in a professional services firm, having joined the business a decade ago following a career change. I trained there, qualifying in 2017 and being promoted to Associate in 2019.
I recently applied for Salaried Partner and found out a couple of weeks ago that I was successful. The position is to take effect from May.
I was informed that the Board would be meeting to agree my package. I already know the benefits in terms of holiday and healthcare etc so the only outstanding matter is the salary. I obviously know broadly what the average is for this part of the world.
Today I had a call from my manager to inform me that this years "salary review" is taking a long time as it is very complicated process and requires a huge amount of work. The aim is for everything to be in place ahead of 1 May where the appointments take effect. In the meantime I cannot tell anyone about my promotion.
I'm feeling rather non-plussed about the whole thing now. Although it is a step up and will invariably mean a higher salary, I want to be able to consider the offer and, if necessary, negotiate. After all, my responsibilities will increase so its not unreasonable for me to be appropriately paid for the additional work I'll be doing. The firm does have a tendency to pay below market rates. It seems there is an expectation that I will just happily accept whatever I am given. I suspect internal candidates do not often challenge the salaries offered at promotion.
I'd appreciate any guidance or advice on how to proceed. I don't want to be pushy but I do think they should tell me my new salary more than a couple of weeks before the role takes effect!
