Month’s notice period during probation? Normal

I received my contract for my job offer late last week and it states that from day one, if I resign during the probationary period (which is 6 months), I have to give one months notice. I thought when you’ve only just started, you only had to give a weeks notice.

It’s a job I’m not 100% sure about I must admit, but I wanted to give it a chance to see if I like it. I’m also waiting on an offer for my preferred role that I think I have a good chance of getting, but the process is a much slower one.

I have five days to query anything (but I feel that’s something that’s a little awkward to ask) and respond, or they’ll assume that I’m happy and that I accept the contract. (Which again I thought was a little unusual).

Has anyone else had to give a months notice when new to the role?

I really don’t know what to do for the best now.

I have a longer notice period! I think a month is pretty normal, a week is very short.

Normal I think during probation. But then I was only on a 3m notice role.

I had 12 weeks notice in probation

I once had a job where for my department they didn't even do a probationary period; you went straight in with 2 months notice. It was a key area for the business and very hard to hire for.

A month is normal, though it tends to depend on whether your pay period is weekly or monthly and also how senior you are. As you go up the pay scale the notice period rises. 3 months isn't unusual.

I’m also waiting on an offer for my preferred role

But if you get this offer they won’t expect you to be able to start straight away anyway, surely?

If you are on probation surely you dont have a contract yet so if you’ve been paid on the Friday you can tell them you wont be in on Monday if you’ve found a new position.

My understanding was it was typical for your notice to match the notice they had to give you - so if during probation they have to give you a month’s notice then that’s the reciprocal agreement.

Thanks all, my previous employer a few years ago (I have been self employed for several years now) must’ve been unusual then. It was a weeks notice in the first three months, then a months notice. I understand the month minimum notice once out of the probation period.

@Mamette when I had the other interview I stated I am self employed which I am. This has come along in the meantime.

I need to decide as don’t want to go muck anyone about. Just worried I’ll be left with nothing if I turn down this first job offer and don’t get the other one.

Thanks

This is wrong. Firstly she works there so she has a contract, the contract was form the moment the offer was made and accepted. A piece of paper confirming all the details is that, a piece of paper confirming all the details, it is evidence of the contract, but it is not the contract. And in any case, this piece of paper should have been handed over on the first day (if not sooner).

The notice period is whatever has been stated, if nothing is stated then statutory notice periods come into play but that is obviously not the case here.
