Can you join a trade union after an occurrence?

I am in my role 6 months and have not yet applied to be a member of a trade union.

An occurrence happened in my work place and I am wondering is it too late for me to join a trade union to get their support on this?

Probably. They might decide to help but you couldn't expect them to. You wouldn't expect to buy insurance after your house had caught fire.

Most unions will not support a case that happens prior to joining. This stops situations such as yours of people joining just to get help and then leaving again afterwards. Join now and keep your subs going so they will be able to help in the future.

Mine has paid for itself as my union managed to get me another 2k back on my redundancy!

Employment lawyer here. On paper, yes. Comments above are correct. In practice it can be a little softer - very often employment issues will be ongoing or you might not be thinking about legal support, but that you might be able to use a rep's advice in a couple of months. In that case, union membership might well be worth it.

If it's straightforwardly legal have a look at your insurances for cover, or failing that, there are law centres and other bodies around giving pro bono help.

Agree with JENNY FOREIGNER look at your house contents insurance policy and your car insurance you might have legal assistance on them.
Good luck op
