Feeling blue about changes at work

My company have recently announced they are making loads of people in the UK redundant & shifting the jobs to abroad where itโ€™s cheaper ๐Ÿ™„ From April, Iโ€™ll be managing an entirely new who have will have no support from experienced colleagues because they are all gone. My job is safe for now, they have decided they need to keep management level within the UK.

I know I should be & I am really grateful my job is safe. But I just feel gutted. Iโ€™m loosing all my colleagues who I work with in the office. No more after work drinks or Christmas meals etc, itโ€™s just me left. Iโ€™m so sad for my colleagues who Iโ€™ve worked with for 8-9 years. Iโ€™ll really miss them (most of them) & itโ€™s so hard to watch the fall out. Most of them have young families ๐Ÿ’” Iโ€™m also really cross that the company I once loved & respected is turning into every other large business & only thinking about saving money, not the people. Not the expertise. Not the impact on anything. My whole team smashed our targets last year, we propped up some major failings elsewhere so our overall departmental stats looked alright. Yet, who cares. You cost too much. Far cheaper in India ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

Iโ€™m dreading it. And letโ€™s face it, once the new team are established, why would they keep management in the UK?! โ˜น๏ธ

Anyone else been through this kinda thing? How was it? Did you stay? I keep thinking I should look for something else but I have a good setup at the mo. Part time hours cos young kids. I WFH, saving a lot of commute costs. Itโ€™s quite flexible, which is helpful with kids! Iโ€™m paid a reasonable salary for my job.

Sigh. I am really grateful to keep my job, I hope I donโ€™t come across as woe is me. Just feeling a bit sad about it all I guess..

I think how you are feeling is normal and understandable. These kinds of changes are pretty destabilising for everyone involved, and the feeling of course as you say is that there are going to be more of them.

It takes times to settle down into acceptance, and appreciating the plus points about the job that exist for now. You can always research other opportunities on the quiet?

It's horrible.
Not quite the same but I left a job recently. for months we had been working on half staffing but still managed to smash targets through sheer hard work. Our reward was being cut to a manager for half the week ( shared between 2 teams), being told there would be no further training and to limit how many postage stamps we used. This from a funder who thinks nothing of wasting vast amounts of charity donated money on ridiculous projects. I decided it was time to go.

Why don't you take the opportunity to look for a new job? You're doing one anyway, so might as well get a pay rise to go with it.

Make sure you keep in touch with all your old friends. Set a date for a catch with everyone in a few months.

In the meantime, you'll be working with lots of new people and you'll find a new circle soon enough.

This is the downside of the Covid introduced WFH trend as if you can work from your lounge so can anyone across the world work from theirs...

I think this is a serious shift in working habits that's going to have ramifications.

Thanks to Brexit my role was sent over to the EU head office. Except they employed a (man) in the U.K. who was a National of that particular EU company.
Basically, it was Brexit, however a few years down the line it has actually done me a favour but also I have the benefit of counselling following PTSD (not related) to help adapt balance and priorities. In that way, I am lucky I guess.

Happened to a friend of mine, about 15 years ago. Worked for an insurance company, they decided to move jobs to India to save money. Strangely, not the call centre (which was usual in those days) but the staff who processed the policy applications. My friend went out there for a few months to train the new staff.

The company was then taken over by another one and I donโ€™t think it exists now, except as part of its parent group. Everyone was made redundant in the mid-2000s.
