Sick pay/ employers ultimatum

lollipopsdays · 16/03/2022 21:01

Help pls
So off work since October 2021
Getting basic sick pay
Employer says if I don't chase up GP by next week with tangible outcome for my referral, I will be penalised (I don't control the NHS)
I Have just got a job today starting 1st week of April
I want to hand in my notice this week but just wondering
if it's possible to get my sick pay from company A in April & get paid salary by company B in April & then hand in notice to company A in April after getting April's sick pay & company B's salary.

No.

MichelleScarn · 16/03/2022 21:05

I don't think you can... would you not get double taxed as well?

AnxiousHeffalump · 16/03/2022 21:05

No. Surely if you are signed off sick, you can’t do another job.

MichelleScarn · 16/03/2022 21:05

Have you definitely got new job? Don't they need reference from current job?

Useranon1 · 16/03/2022 21:06

No of course not. You can't earn from a new job while being too sick to work for your existing job!!!

Preeeettyprettygood · 16/03/2022 21:07

No I can't imagine you can and tbh I think you're being cheeky

Indigokitten · 16/03/2022 21:08

How do you know that you’ll be well enough to work on April 1st for a new employer, but seem unable to return to your current role?

Ilikewinter · 16/03/2022 21:14

Wow thats a long time to be off sick, are you sure job B will still offer you a role when they see you sickness record?.
I guess job A will gratefully receive your notice.
And in answer to your question - if you do this you'll be classed as having 2 jobs and you'd need to check out how it affects your tax.

RaininSummer · 16/03/2022 21:24

Seems odd. If you aren't sick why are you off?

ChicCroissant · 16/03/2022 21:34

I wouldn't advise this at all. If you were doing two different jobs it's possible that you may be too sick for one role (one that required physical effort for example) and able to work another one. But getting a new job - if it's similar to your old one - would be hard to justify. Are you part-time?

Also, as other posters have said, if the job offer is subject to references I'd be cautious at this stage!

Actually, the replies are (possibly) wrong.

If you are fit to work at your new job under the conditions of your note but still unable to do your old one you can be working and sick at the same time.

Some warnings:

You would need to not be supposed to be there at the same time. Don't be trying to overlap two FT jobs, that's fraud.

You should disclose your sick note to the new job. If your sick note impacts your ability to do the new job they may not start you.

Even if your sick note ends when your new job starts you probably want to have a conversation about your long term illness and perhaps request an occupational health referral.

Babyroobs · 16/03/2022 21:39

You are signed off sick from one job but want to start another? Has the new job not queried why you've been off work for almost six months? Is the new role significantly less physically demanding or something?

MaizeAmaze · 16/03/2022 21:47

If you could (theoretically) do both jobs in April, yes you can.
So, say job 1 is M-F 9-5, and job 2 is evenings and weekends.

If both jobs would be M-F 9-5, no you cant.

poachedegg2 · 16/03/2022 21:51

I did it. Was off job 1 with work related stress. Got a job with a care agency, started immediately and handed notice into last job same day but with 4 weeks on the sick. No idea if it was fraud or whatever but it was 10 years ago and no one ever said anything at all.

Overthebow · 16/03/2022 22:15

What's your notice period for your current job? Surely you need to hand in your notice, work the notice period (off sick) then start your new job after.

unfortunateevents · 19/03/2022 13:32

If you are sufficiently unwell to have been off work since last October and you are awaiting a referral for consultation/treatment how are you going to start work in a new job on 1st April? Your energies would be better spent chasing that referral and working on improving your health rather than figuring out how you can be paid by two companies at once!

MalbecandToast · 20/03/2022 18:06
Hmm
BBCONEANDTWO · 20/03/2022 18:08

Seems a bit dishonest getting sick pay and then getting paid for working on top of that. Surely that would be fraud?

AccidentalMindFuck · 20/03/2022 18:08

How can you be well enough to work at job B but not A?
You’ve been swinging the lead for 6 months I’m not surprised they want proof!
