NHS Unsocial hours rates

Tranquilitybaby · 16/03/2022 16:53

Do they apply to most bands? I’ve been offered a part time 17 hours a week band 2 admin role and 11 of those are a night shift. Nothing was mentioned in my interview about Unsocial hours pay, only the annual full time salary was mentioned so I asked the hourly rate but the interviewer didn’t know (so I’ve googled and worked that out myself - min wage), but a NHS friend commented that I should get Unsocial hours payment.

Does this vary by trust and also the % rate paid as an the add on, or is it a standard amount as on the NHS Employers website.

Any advice would be great as I’m not getting responses to the two emails I’ve sent and it’s frustrating, as I haven’t filled in any of the offer or checks paperwork yet and don’t want to unless I know the salary.

Thanks

Applies to everyone employed under Agenda for Change. The percentage enhancement varies according to your band and it applies from 8pm-6am, Saturday, Sunday and BH (if I remember right).
The lower the band, the higher percentage of your salary you will receive as enhancement. There was previously also some rule about if the majority of your shift falls in unsocial hours, enhancement is paid for the whole thing, cant remember the exact details. Check the Agenda for Change for full information

Thank you so much. Why could HR just have been as helpful as you when I asked. Gave them all the info too, band, hours given and days of the week but they said it’s upto my manager, who I didn’t even have a name for.

I recently accepted a band 2 HCA position and HR could not even confirm to me whether enhancements would be paid for weekends/ nights !

Exactly the same then, it’s so frustrating. I really want the job but it feels like there’s warning signs already. Who in any other sector would accept a job offer not knowing what they’ll be paid, surely they must understand that.

Have you completed and sent back all the paperwork? I haven’t yet, don’t know what to do.

There is useful information on the above link. Band 2 is normal pay plus 41% for night time hours (depending on start/finish time) so works out at about £13.38 per hour for those hours.
Your payslip would outline basic pay at standard rate then list an extra amount for the unsociable hours.

Just make sure that you ask your manager jow to claim it - it won't be paid automatically and is paid a month in arrears. So you will need to complete a timesheet of some sort (whatever the Trust uses) at the end of each month so that the manager can submit it to payroll to be paid. You wouldn't get it if you are off sick or annual leave (although there would be an automatic average paid for periods of annual leave - although again this relies on management informing payroll that you were on leave).

Mirrorball2022 · 17/03/2022 07:20

Our unsocial hours are automatically confirmed via the roster system which gets ‘locked in’ by my line manager which is all now on the IT system. I don’t have to do anything with timesheets I don’t have to claim it or do anything but it is paid in arrears. So what unsociable i work in say feb I get in March pay.

As you’ll find trusts all work slightly differently on some things and it’s not as streamlined as it should be U.K. wide. But pay is per agenda for change and is the same so the link above will help. Not sure why HR couldn’t say that to you though!

Thank you everyone, I hoped it would be standard as detailed in the agenda for change website. That’s great.

So would I best to just go ahead and complete and the forms for the checks now and just hope all will be ok as I have no confirmation of the enhanced rate in writing, only the basic annual salary in the offer letter.

Just another tip, you need to contact the finance department about pay related matters I have found in NHS. Good luck with new job
