Large insta following effect job search?

Lifewithusthree · 13/03/2022 21:57

I have a question, wanted opinions really!
I have a large Instagram following (50k) and I wanted to know if because of this employers would be less likely to employ me? I just do family blogging, but idk how this is gonna effect me when I go back to work. I got made redundant before I had my daughter in 2021 so just looking for ideas.
I don't really get much money from insta, more a few freebies but I do turn them down as we don't need them as my partner has a good income.

How would they know?

@Useranon1

How would they know?
Lots of employers search social media networks for potential employees these days
Lampface · 13/03/2022 22:01

Depends on your content really!

Useranon1 · 13/03/2022 22:51

Well yes but not usually Instagram. And even if you have 50000 follows, how does that effect your employer? You could spend twice as long on there with half as many, so it's not really that indicative?

Hoppinggreen · 14/03/2022 18:25

We check SM before making job offers
It would depend on what kind of followers and/or the type of content you posted as to whether it would make a difference to whether we made an offer or not

MrsTimRiggins · 14/03/2022 18:27

It would vary massively on the nature of the content you’re sharing, surely?

Ostryga · 14/03/2022 18:30

Well are you sharing recipes or porn??

If anything, I would see it as a positive. There is a lot of work involved in building a big following, and those are definitely transferable skills.

Depends on what the job is. I, imagine, in some jobs it could put then off. Especially, if senior and requiring alot of hours and commitment.

Some companies maybe abroad of backlash and problems if you 'het cancelled' or be concerned you need to devote alot of time to your social media and won't want to take a step back.

Lots of companies won't care or even check.

DetailMouse · 14/03/2022 19:12

My boss is very sneery abut people who overshare on social media or who post a lot of pictures -especially pouting and showing off-- so although she'd do a thorough interview and social media wouldn't be the deciding factor, it would affect her opinion of you and could make a difference if it was a close call.

We always have a look.

It must depend what the work is though. For some posts, someone who knows how to work SM would be a bonus

Tiredmummy06 · 14/03/2022 19:17

wouldn't make an absolute jot of difference if you go for a job in the public sector i.e. civil service or health service as they are ONLY allowed to base their offer of employment on how you do in interview. Once you get through shortlisting to interview it is simply down to how well you score in their interview

liveforsummer · 14/03/2022 19:20

Do you actually post on your given name though. I post on various SM but not in my name so employers would be none the wiser.

Tiger401 · 14/03/2022 19:24

I work in finance and one of the women who has been promoted very quickly has a 30k insta following. Hers is lifestyle of living in London. It’s incredibly dull. However, it hasn’t affected her career

It might not make a difference at interview but you might have to declare it as secondary employment if you did get the job. You'd have to make sure you didn't have anything in social media that would connect you to your day job as they wouldn't want the organisation to be seen as supporting products, receiving special favours etc.
TonkaTruckduck · 14/03/2022 19:30

It completely depends what job you're applying for. SM skills could be seen as a positive.
I'm a bit eye rolling about bloggers though, so I'd see it as a negative. But as I'm public sector it couldn't go against you if I was recruiting manager, but I'd definitely be having very in depth conversations about confidentialty etc.

Cottonfrenzie · 14/03/2022 19:35

Just change your settings to private whilst job hunting. Change it back to public once you've secured the job.

As long as you don't infringe their social media policy it shouldn't be a problem once you are in the job. Never mention work online though

Hasselhoffsheadband · 14/03/2022 19:45

It depends on the content really. Wholesome family content, or funny stories about your kids, is probably fine.

Loads of sex references including your current face sex toy, swearing, frequent shots of you in your underwear with your nips and pubes sticking out, constantly talking how your kids are such fucking arseholes and you hate your husband......probably not so much.

Hasselhoffsheadband · 14/03/2022 19:45

Fave not face!

Tiredmummy06 · 14/03/2022 20:49

that's true, also most public sector organisations have a social media policy for staff so you could easily check. it's usually related to do with conflicts of interest and organisational reputation so best to check. I have no idea about private sector, imagine it's completely different
