Failing probation where to go

I’ve got an issue which I’ve posted about here before. So I’m on a contract for a year, have had a 5 month probation review in January where there were a lot of criticisms. However I hadn’t been having 1:1s with one of my bosses partly because he was working abroad for a short time last year and working shorter days.

So I’ve addressed a few of the issues and now in past month and even week I feel like I’m finally doing much better, understanding his needs. My other boss I don’t have much to do for her but partly at her request.

So last week I get a letter inviting me to a final probation meeting but lots of nit picking and also contradictory re work I’m meant to do for one boss, I’ve asked her abc she says no. Naturally I got upset and stressed over this and am looking for another job. I couldn’t find immediately my contract (prob in attic) but not in personal emails so messaged my direct boss (an executive assistant manager) to ask what my notice period was. She asks for a chat via a teams chat where she acts fake concerned and asked me if I was going to resign and I said I wasn’t sure. But that afternoon I had a great time with my boss and felt we had a real synergy. Like things were falling into place, I’m getting to know much better what he wants etc. He seemed very happy too and said so.

So my question is, long term I’d like to retrain and leave but short term I don’t want to do anything rash. I’ve sometimes left a job
quickly.

I spoke to a close friend and my mum and both said they thought it was very nit picking and bad management. Boyfriend has no idea what to say as he moreorless is self employed.

So what should I do?

Why didn’t you ask HR for I for re notice period. Unless you are using it as a veiled threat and that’s why you asked your manager? In one afternoon you feel that the job is fine even though you’ve felt so shot about your job you were wanting to leave ? I think you need to decide what whether you want to stay in this job. Be wary of using the I will leave .. line because it could backfire on you if you don’t mean it

That was quite an unusual (and rash) decision. How do you expect your boss to react if you ask something like that? You say she expressed "fake concern", were you hoping she'd beg you to stay if you asked that question? You may as well have just said you're planning to leave.

What was actually in the letter inviting you to this final probation meeting? You said in your other thread you'd basically fallen out with two senior people and had to be reassigned?

You've probably marked your card now though.

I'd focus on looking for a new job since your contract runs out in a few months whatever happens. How far developed are your plans to retrain?

That’s not a question. What is it you want our thoughts on?

If you were five months into a 12 month contract in Jan, you don’t have tonnes of time left. Start job hunting, and if you find something you like better, take it.

@cornflakedreams - yes it was probably unusual and rash - however I didn't expect to receive a letter saying my contract might be terminated.

I honestly didn't know what my notice period was - whether it was 1 or 2 weeks so I asked her. I didn't want her to beg me to stay, no.

My letter inviting me to the final probation meeting had a report attached saying lots of things but basically being very nit picking.

@VioletOcean - no, not necessarily in one afternoon I've felt things are fine - I just meant things seemed to be fine re me and my boss working together.

It probably means I will more than likely resign soon, but I would like another job/contract to go to in the meantime.

@MartinMartinMarti - I was asking for thoughts as to if I should resign or not.

As I said before I'll look around for another job.

I don't think you need to worry about resigning.😲

@Crazycrazylady - thanks for that! I asked because I wanted a heads up from my POV and also theirs… previous contracts have been 1 week’s notice but this is 2.

Anyway I’ve got another interview for a contract til end of the year tomorrow and a possible interview for a permanent job but thanks for your concern!
