Company car - I'm an idiot

I started a new job last year. The offer email said I would get a company car. When my contract came through it didn't have the company car on it but I was so desperate for a job I didn't kick up a fuss and just signed anyway. Plus covid meant no travelling at the time. I'm such an idiot.

Someone has just been promoted into a role at the same level as mine and they have been given a company car. I know they were told not to tell me (but they like to gloat about everything to me so they inevitably did). I know they are paid less than me but are less experienced. Is there anything I can do about this or should I just put it down to experience and accept it should be a lesson learnt in speaking up for myself. It's been 8 months since I started. I'm so pissed off at myself! (Also I am now travelling quite a bit in current, tiny ancient car that is starting to make dodgy noises).

What did your manager say when you asked about your company car?

Ariela · 04/03/2022 13:59

I would simply raise the query with HR re your job offer email stating company car and ask when you can have yours given promoted employee has theirs.

Why do posters do this? She clearly hasn’t said anything to anyone. That’s the point of the post!

I’d dig out the email, forward it to your boss and cc in HR and query it. Just imagine you are a mediocre man. Grin

Send the email you got stating company car to HR and enquire as to why you havent been offered one.

Bare in mind the tax implications on a company car, so be sure that this is something you want.

Maybe to make a point that this would be the most obvious thing to do instead of creating a post on MN, and if she hasn't even asked her manager about the car, this could all be sorted easily

Some companies offer cash in lieu of company car so you pay income tax and NI but still a bump in your pay. I agree with previous posts that benefit in kinds for company tax are not advantages unless electric cars (for the time being)

JunkIsland · 04/03/2022 14:29

If this is a decent company they will either honour the offer letter or be able to provide a solid explanation as to why the contract was changed (without the change being highlighted). The latter seems unlikely if you have colleagues in similar roles earning the same or less who do have one.

It seems very likely that this is an error that can be easily cleared up and you’ll get your car.

vitahelp · 04/03/2022 14:57

I would bring it up and say that you assumed you weren't going to be given the car until after your probation period was over, than ask when it you will get one.

spuddy56 · 04/03/2022 16:13

Thanks all. I don't even understand why I get so worried about this sort of thing?! Like I'll be considered greedy or ungrateful or something. And now I'm also worried that they'll think I'm really weird for bringing it up now. Every time I see my manager I tell myself to bring it up and then I don't.....

Thank you, this is a good plan.

Assume your pay difference is not a car allowance?

BashfulClam · 04/03/2022 16:16

Don’t bring it up, put it in writing. If you haven’t been given a cat then you should be claiming mileage for your own Vehicle.

EinsteinaGogo · 04/03/2022 17:04

I think it's really important to make sure you get everything owed to you in a job role, as long as it will make you financially better off.

Be VERY clear what the tax implications are with any company car you might be entitled to.

They are definitely not the straightforward perk they used to be years and years ago.

Yes but why don’t you just SAY that?
