New contract and the is

Ok so I was recently head hunted by a recruiter for a new role, I was made redundant last year and the new role seemed exciting and a real challenge, the salary was also back to what I had been earning - id taken any job I could to avoid unemployment but on a reduced salary.

Once I had a formal I offer I handed my notice in, in the lead up to starting I emailed to ask for a copy of of my contract, I was advised they didn't send these out beforehand but id get it on my first day

Anyway I got it today and Im so worried! There is literally no company sick pay at all, just SSP. I mean I can't remember the last time I was off sick but what if one day I have an unexpected illness and need a period of time off?.

I get that employers don't have to offer enhanced pay but I feel like I've walked into the worst employment contact if my career - they only offer Statutory mat pay too, I think I'm one and done but that makes me feel sad to know I never could afford to now anyway

Anyone have advice or can re comment a good income protection insurer? Iv dine a few quotes but as I'd need payouts without a long wait period the monthly cost seems so high!

Feel sick , hand hold needed and advice on how to oricptect myself should the worst happen, ideally it seems a good role and with redundancy and a truly crap job hunt period I just wanted to find my new work home

Calm down and look at this a different way. You needed a job at this salary and so you have compromised on T & Cs. That’s fine, it’s a pragmatic decision to get you in the work place at the right level.

Focus your energy on finding a new job with the salary + T & Cs you are looking for. Don’t worry about leaving after 3/6 months, just say the reason for leaving is better T & Cs.

Yep. Continue the job hunt. Don't see this as the end. And don't hand in your notice again before having sight of the new contract - such conditions are as important as salary clearly.

If you aren't sure you want another Baby and not prone to bouts of sickness requiring time off work I really don't know why you are worried if the job is challenging, pays well and otherwise what you want? Surely if you have been on a reduced salary due to Redundancy the additional salary will enable you to save money for supplement any maternity pay - you don't have to take a year off on maternity leave?

That's for your input and advice

I really do see myself loving this job, it's pretty niche and unlikely to find something similar easily

I guess I'm just surprised to have such bad t&c and it's worried me

Does anyone have any advice re income protection insurance? I'm thinking I could take something put to safeguard me if ever the worst should happen and I do need time off.

It's not a huge salary, pretty average really and no income in would be a huge blow to keeping any outgoings that are essential being met

Just feel vulnerable

Income protection insurance is not the answer. Most are hugely expensive and then limited situations in which they pay out. It is a useless product and is why most people don’t usually have it.

I agree with previous posts, you are better off now than you were after being made redundant. So stick with this for now and look for something that has T&Cs more to your liking. Sometimes there has to be a trade off.

Bollocks.

When you are job hunting next time don't put in your notice until you see the contract if you have only one offer on the table. If you have more just tell the company who refuses to give you sight of the contract that you can't take their offer up.

The reason companies don't give the contract out is because they know it it is shit and are worried you will walk away.

Anyway do your job for a 12-18 months and then look for a new one with better T&C.

wouldukissafrog · 08/03/2022 20:26

@RedWingBoots thanks, I think I do need to stick this out a bit as it's quite a niche role and 12months or so in role would at least help me progress in a future job hunt

Just feel so deflated, it's been a hard slog since redundancy I was so keen to just find my new 'work home'

I wonder if they care or realise how demoralising their contract makes employees feel. Just even a few better benefits that make me feel more secure and id happily stay put and work my ass off for them
