Paying back enhanced mat pay - tax

I’m leaving my job after 6 months of returning from mat leave, meaning I have to pay back a proportion of my enhanced mat pay. I presume I have to pay back the gross amount, but then I’ll lose out on the tax and NI I paid on it… does anyone know if you can claim the tax back, or how this works?

You’ll pay back the net amount. Payroll will deduct the gross and the payroll system should do the rest.

If you're giving up work entirely you need to claim via HMRC for overpaid tax. Ordinarily an overpayment is automatically applied to your tax code so you pay less tax in future, but if you're not working a refund would be the alternative.

I'd wait until the tax year has finished though so it's cut and dry.

Re maternity repayment, it will be net not gross, the payroll department should give you the figure

Then you will receive a P45 - you can contact HMRC after 6 April to get them to check if you have overpaid tax
