Not putting down previous job on application form.

I started a job back in January, and worked there 10 days over the 3 weeks before being signed off due to high stress ( I was miss sold the role and it ended up being completely different to what they had showed me when I went for the first visit). I was signed off for 3 weeks before handing in my resignation. I then applied for another job and got an interview. It went really well and they’ve asked me to come in for the second round of interviews with their chosen candidates.

The thing is I asked around and people said don’t put it on, including my friend who’s a teacher, so I didn’t put this previous job down that I was only in for 10 days. I didn’t feel there was a point as I’d hadn’t gained any skills from it (apart from being taken for a mug with things) and I was more like a fill in staff member the way they treated me.

The thing is, I’m now panicking that because I haven’t put it down, or mentioned it that if I was to get this job they could then fire me for not mentioning it in the first place.

You don't have to put it down don't worry it's fine

Bollix · 02/03/2022 00:56

Don't give it another thought - Good luck Flowers

Thank you for such a quick reply. In the interview They had asked if I was excited to get back into work (I was out of work for a few years raising children). I was so nervous in general I was like yes I am. It wasn’t until I got home that I thought oh crap should I have told them then.

Do you think I should ever mention it at all, or just keep it off the radar?

@Bollix I’m so sorry, your reply didn’t come up when I sent the last message. Thank you for the good luck wishes 😊

Bear in mind that your P45, will show previous employers name & address.

But also that as you have been out of work they won't be expecting a P45 and could process as emergency taxation.

Even if you did want to provide it, the chance of a random HR body joining up dots is minimal, and you haven't done anything wrong. If anything, well done on making a quick call and minimizing the impact for all parties after being misled about the 10 day role.

I’m surprised your teacher friend said it was ok - this is a huge red flag for teachers as for safeguarding reasons they need to know all previous schools, in case there has been a safeguarding issue at the one you spent 10 days at and would be gross misconduct if found out. For any other job I can’t imagine it will make any difference.

Muddledmotherhood · 02/03/2022 07:26

Ah okay, this is for a role within a school, so do you think I should mention it to them then and just say I’m really sorry pp I was told different advice on whether I should put it down or not.

I’ve been out of work so long that I didn’t even realise that it would make an impact.

I don’t want to start on bad terms if I get the job, but now I’m worried they will think I’m a liar, when that isn’t the case at all.

The big thing is references - most teaching jobs I’ve applied to have been very explicit that one of your references must be your most recent teaching role/role in a school, because they can check if there are any outstanding safeguarding complaints/issues/investigations. I think you really need to talk to HR/whoever has been dealing with the hiring admin.

If its within a school, it will come up when the DBS checks go through and your tax code for the year is revealed. This is bad form and from a management perspective, someone not revealing a job would set alarm bells for this being a potential safeguarding. You also have to show what you were doing for the entire period not working, eg with benefit paperwork or similar.
Muddledmotherhood · 02/03/2022 08:17

@ChoiceMummy so do you think I should tell them today when I go in, or ring them before hand and just explain the situation to them, or has the damage been done now? I didn’t leave it off to be quiet about it, I just thought because it was such a short stint that it wouldn’t be needed or relevant and because my friend had said dont worry about it I didn’t mention it.

Should I just turn down the job role now then, as like you say they aren’t going to want me now.

You don't need to hand over a P45
Babyroobs · 02/03/2022 11:10

I think for ten days I would probably leave it off too as it indicates problems if you stuck something for such a short period of time.

Strawberriesinsummer · 02/03/2022 11:10

Is it a teaching / teaching assistant role or admin within a school? I’m asking because the reply will be different depending on your answer Smile

Although I guess you were actually employed for a month or more despite only working ten days. most employers will also ask you to declare sick time which is going to be awkward if you get offered a job and have to fill out an occupational health form and they ask about sick days as surely you will need to declare the 3 weeks of sick leave?

I presume that you had to fill out a full application with the dates of each employment etc and space for current employment?
I would let them know that you completed the application before you started your role there (if plausible) so wanted to update them is one option if want to try and not have to be straight. If not applicable then yep I'd be as direct as possible.
