Is being self-employed a big turn off for employers?

Just that really.

I've been self-employed for 15 years, and have been looking for employment for over a year now.

Lots of applications, lots of interviews, no job.

Feedback has always been that 'someone else has more relevant skills and experience'. I've been working in my field for 25 years and know lots of people who have secured jobs with no direct experience, so it's a bit bewildering and frightening tbh.

I'm trying to work out if it's my age (early 50s) or being self-employed for a long time or something else that's meaning that I just can't find a job.

I applied for entry level, 'long shot' jobs, things well within my capabilities and experience and everything in between with no joy.

I know it's meant to be easier to get a job if you already have one, but the only way I can get one is if I'm offered one, and I can't do that by myself!

It hasn’t stopped me, in fact one the main reasons I got the job I am in now is due to my SE work for 16 years.
It means I think slightly differently to most employees.
I’m a similar age to you as well
