Voluntary Work

I liked a post from an associate on LI. It’s a Treasurer for a charity, equivalent to 5 days a year work so teeny tiny. I liked it to get coverage for him as I have a big following on there.

He’s messaged me asking if I wanted it. I hadn't seen this. He’s now set up a convo with the charity CEO. I don’t mind as such but I’ve gone on the actual advert and it’s voluntary.

Do any of you charitable folks carry out a role you normally get (well!) paid for for free ?

The charity is not the RSPCA or something I’d normally contribute towards, but a vague local authority volunteering charity - not that it makes any difference to my question tho Grin

Yes. I volunteer as a school governor and as a charity trustee. Mostly strategic management, financial oversight, some HR stuff etc.

Charities absolutely rely on skilled people who are willing give their time for nothing. There is a whole army of people across the country doing this kind of thing. Lots of them give a lot of time as well. Mostly professional people with day jobs of their own.

It can be very rewarding and extremely interesting, but it's a commitment and I wouldn't do it personally if I did not believe in the value of the organisation.

Not quite sure what you mean by the way by local authority charity...I assume that it is actually a registered charity and therefore independent of the local authority?

I do a small amount of work I'd normally be paid for as a volunteer, but only for a cause I care deeply about.
Otherwise my volunteering is for something completely different but which I thoroughly enjoy.
I wouldn't do free stuff for a cause or organisation I didn't feel strongly about unless there was some sort of advantage in it for me (eg networking). There are a lot of CFs around.

Yes.
Well, I don't get well paid (!) but within my organisation there are loads of accountants (for example) who do treasury roles for the voluntary sector.
Many have said they even get days off 'in lieu' from their companies if they volunteer for charities.
We've had volunteer hours from legal people as well.
From trades (builders, electricians, plumbers, tree surgeons etc)
From folk like teachers who run weekly groups (Scouts, Guides, GB, BB, etc), paramedic who deliver the first aid training to Leaders, as well as to the young people.
etc
etc
etc

For five days per year, it's good to go on your CV and could lead to other things you might nit have thought of before. Yes, even at your level.

Yes - I volunteer as treasurer & trustee for 1 small local community charity; as a volunteer leader for a children's group locally & also as treasurer for another charity too which is more work than the others but it's worth it.

I am happy to contribute by skills and time where I can for the benefit of other people outside my professional work.
