Asking company to create a management position for me

I have a performance review coming up at the end of the month as part of my development plan I would like to propose taking on a management position and I am hoping that some people here can give me some advice on how to go about it.

I work in a drpartment of 12. I am bottom of the ladder, I report to the department head and she reports directly to one of the dire tors. The team is split in to two the majority of us focus in one issue while 4 people focus on a related issue. I want to propose that I become team leader or similar for the larger part of the team, a role that has never existed before. Ive never done anything like this before and I'm unsure how to go about it.

I had a brief end of year review where the boss was very positive and I know they are happy wih me and want to keep me in the company. They struggle to recruit for people with a specific skill I have and our department neighbours have had an open position with this skill for around 4 months so I know they will be reluctant to have me going elsewhere.

I have a brief idea of what responsibikities I would be interested in taking on but it also depends on how my boss would see the role and what she would be prepared to delegate to me.

Anyone have any tips about how to make my case at the performance review?

It will be tough - you’ll have to convince them on the business need for the role, ie how is that going to improve things for the business, and second why it should be you to do it. If your bottom of the chain you’ll have to explain why you should get it over the others, and then secondly, if you take on these responsibilities then are you going to have time to do the special skill you mention.

I think you need to consider a business case based on how such a promotion would increase company profit and output whilst decreasing expense.
Be prepared to make an argument for why you should be promoted over your colleagues and how you think that would impact morale.

Is your special skill worthy of being singled out?

Have you any experience managing a team and if not, how would you address this?

I am the longest serving member of the group that does the task that I focus on take on the tasks that are a bit more complicated so I think I already have a case there for being promoted above others as I have more experience and knowledge of certain aspects.

I have management experience albiet only 1 year of experience from 2015 with a team of 3 in a totally different area.

I had a salary increase kick in from january and my boss told me that with the increase I have gone outside of the top range for my level in the company so I was hoping to use the reasoning that my responsibilities should be brought in line with my salary. I would not initially persure a salary increase.

Ex colleagues have told me that my boss does not like the certain aspects of the management position which are coincientally the aspecta that interest me so I hope I can make a case that way as well as her being able to reduce her workload. I have noticed that she is often working outside of office hours so I assume she has too much on her plate.

How I would increase profit for the company is a difficult one. I will have to have a good think about that and try to make a case.

I would plan to retain the tasks that relate to my specific skill and other colleagues could take over the majority of my other tasks to allow me time for the management reaponsibilities.
It may mean that the comoany has yo hire an extra person in our department though because I am not sure we have enough extra capacity for the majority of my workload to be absorbed by other colleagues. I cant see the comoany being too keen on hiring an extra person

You need to come at it on how this is best for the company.

You being the longest serving is totally irrelevant, and you doing the most complex work is probably a negative for you here - you say that you’ll give up some of your current work to concentrate on management, so presumably getting someone else to do the complex stuff would be tough.

Start with the problems that need solving/ opportunities that there might be.

Then think about why a team leader would be helpful in solving them.

Finally, look at why you’re the best person for the job.

Good luck!
