Help me decide between two jobs

Job 1 is a car drive away working in a supermarket for minimum wage 20 hour contract.

Job 2 is working at a school term time walking distance from my house. Also minimum wage. Guaranteed hours in reality but zero hours contract initially.

Both jobs are same wage but one is closer so no petrol costs.

I have no preference I only want a part time wage to pay for my own pocket money.

I think I would enjoy both jobs the same and have no vested interest in either offer.

Being deliberately vague as family are on here and I don't want to out myself.

So hive mind ...

WWYD?

Do you have children that means the term time hours would benefit you?

Nosnogginginthekitchen · 22/02/2022 13:02

The school one. Not having to drive is a big deal, plus there are a whole bunch of skills available to learn in a school. Couple of friends of mine started as dinner supervisors, one is now training as a TA and the other got involved in the office work and has moved on to do office admin for a supply company

Is the pension better in the school? I'd probably take that one regardless - much nicer and more economic to be able to walk to work

SundayyDinner · 22/02/2022 14:42

@OinkyO two in secondary one and in primary so yes, definitely.

I'd choose job 2

caranations · 22/02/2022 14:46

School for sure. No travelling costs, and no problems with getting time off during school holidays. Once your dc are older, you will probably be able to increase your hours if you want to.

Job 2

I've heard rave reviews from people working in supermarkets - the discount on your food shop could make your effective earnings go further.

SundayyDinner · 22/02/2022 14:59

Do you work for a supermarket @formalineadeline? Or are you just talking about friends and family experiences? The particular shop I'm talking about only gives discounts after six months but it's a discount nonetheless I suppose.

If the pay is similar and you'd enjoy both jobs, I'd always go with the job I could walk to.
However, if I needed more pay and the possibility of taking on more shifts, I'd go with the supermarket job even though I'd have to drive. I'd assume the extra shifts would pay for petrol costs.
But if you only want pocket money and hours to tie in with a family, the school job.

Friends, not me, so maybe my comments should be taken with a pinch of salt tbf.

One in particular just made an impression on me - she took the job after redundancy while she figured out her next move, but she was so happy working there and with the quality of life it gave her compared to previously that she stayed.

*qol in terms of reducing her grocery costs (I think she once said they also got first dibs on items reduced as short life? But that might have been due to shift timings) and the flexibility and freedom of hours/patterns.
